Best cheap red wine under 5 CHF

I am in value-seeking mode so I got into the quest of looking for real value under 5 CHF.

I will share my best find with you:

4.99CHF Coto de Hayas - Joven from Spain. A mixture of Garnacha and Syrah. The wine is sold at Landi.

Anyone else with best value examples?

Re: Best cheap red wine under 5 CHF

Denner Barbera del Piemonte, CHF 2.95/liter, you won't find better for 2-3x the price.

Re: Best cheap red wine under 5 CHF

Watchdog did an interesting article on the price of wines, apparently the average value of the actual wine in the bottle of a GBP5 wine was.......21pence! Due to the costs associated with the transport, profit, tax and duty etc.
Where as if you spend more on a bottle the amount spent on the actual wine goes up 10 fold or something, so if you think wine for 21pence tastes good, thats fine, everyone has there own palate, but i dont think its fair to accuse anything that costs more to be french and pretentious.
Unless you where taking the piss and i have been in Switzerland too long and lost my sense of humour, which could be the case as it snowed today and the first thing i thought was , oh no, i haven't changed to my winter tyres yet, what am i going to do!

Yep .....

The price of wine, alone, is not a pre-requisite for quality - it's down to personal tastes.
I have enjoyed wines from both ends of the spectrum, as I have disliked others, too.

Unfortunately, some French producers and merchants seem reluctant to accent that other nations can produce quality wines, and don't have to put on an inflated price tag in order to imply quality.

L'Etourneau Beaujolais AOC, 25.50 for 6 bottles in Denner. They also have a Côte du Rhône for 4.90 a bottle that's pretty decent.

no no, not at all. Those I mentioned are good wines. Sure the 1 L wines of Lidl and Aldi are far too sweet, and the CHF 1.95 Rosso at COOP indeed IS vinegar. But I would NOT use that stuff as vinegar either

The 1.95 Red Montagne of COOP is neither vinegar nor sweet, but boring. Even if the flavour is remarkable in view of the price

For 4 to 5 CHF you get really excellent Moroccan and Algerian wines at Aligro. Even the superb Algerian Cuvée du Président is less than 6 CHF. The Gouerrouane from Morocco even is less than CHF 5.-- and really excellent

Re: Best cheap red wine under 5 CHF

Aldi Sud Germany currently sell Guia Real Rioja DOCa reserve– 0,75 Liter bottle – € 4,99 (Liter price € 6,65)
When you get the MWST back then it is ca. €4 for the bottle which is within CHF 5.
It is actually quite fine; a 2010 grape ripened for 3 years with at least 1 year in oak barrels.

Re: Best cheap red wine under 5 CHF

I still put my thumbs up for the 3 litre white wine box at Denner for 9.50. I haven't tried their red yet.

The Coop box wine is not as nice.

What i like is when you think there's not much left and take the bag out of the box and find you have about a litre left!!

The problem with those is that tend to be finished in one sitting chez nous.. Keep topping up the glasses, don't see how much is left, boom, finished. Sore head in the morning!

I'm not fussy with taste vs price however I do find that cheaper stuff really does give me a sore head, especially rosé where as more expensive stuff doesn't..
I have plenty of parecetemol in the cupboard thankfully.

Re: Best cheap red wine under 5 CHF

Denner has a Hardy's Nottage Hill Shiraz that is often on 50% off special for CH 35.70 per carton that is not bad if you like a fuller bodied wine.

They also have Woodbridge (Mondavi) Zinfandel and Shiraz in the same price range when on 50% off special.

Denner also has about every 3 months a Friday/Saturday with all wines -20%, including the ones already on special. The best is to be able to combine the two. For example that puts the Hardy's Shiraz at CHF 4.75 per bottle.

It must be overpriced vinegar then

My favourite from Aldi under 5 chuffs is AFRICAN ROCK Cabernet Sauvignon Pinotage. It helps me to digest their food

Re: Best cheap red wine under 5 CHF

Since my vacation in Sicily, nero d'avola has become one of my favorite varietals.

From Aldi for only CHF 3.49/btl (750ml) : Mario Collina - Nero D'Avola IGT, Terre Siciliane 2013.
http://temi.aldi-suisse.ch/themen/we...genuss_905.htm

A friend of mine laughed at me saying it would taste like vinegar. It certainly does not and while it's not the best nero d'avola I have ever had, it is enjoyable. It has surprised quite a few people.

Re: Best cheap red wine under 5 CHF

DENNER is having one of their quarterly wine sales this Friday and Saturday (27th and 28th of Feb).

They have 20% off on all wines (including wines already on special). The 20% is based on purchasing a full carton (6 bottles).

Depending on what you are interested in, you might find something.

From my experience, you may need to look at a couple of stores because some stores are big into wine, others have a pitiful selection.

It is best to look at their weekly flyer but often they still have wines from previous weeks on special (once again depending on the store).
