By the magic of the search facility....

[Seek] Golden syrup

I found it in Globus in Basel. Presumably the Zürich one will have it too.

Cheers,
Nick

Re: where can I buy golden syrup ?

You can buy Lyles's golden syrup as well as mapel syrup from the E-Centre in Laufenburg. With the exchange rate as it is at the moment it is well worth popping across the boarder and getting the groceries.

Yup, saw golden syrup on sale in Globus' food section, right here in Zürich yesterday. Bought one too.

And to save time...

According to "babelfish" (dict.leo.org didn't have it), "Golden Syrup" is "Goldenen Sirup"; and here is a really useful Google search link..

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...+sirup+schweiz

Cheers,
Nick

actually babelfish just literally translate everything word for word. at dict.cc it says it's either simply Sirup or Zuckersirup.

Re: [Seek] Golden syrup

I was at Globus on Bhf.Strasse in Zurich a few days ago. They have both golden syrup and maple syrup for sale downstairs in the food section. Go to where the checkouts are and there is a row of shelves along the wall near the gift-wrapping section - they sell it there along with other "English" stuff such as bicarb and baking soda.

Spreaed a thin (but not too thin) layer of Golden Syrup over the butter layer

Re: [Seek] Golden syrup

In Romandie it is called 'mélasse' I suppose from molasses. Forgotten the name in German, much cheaper than buying Tate & Lyle.

Edit: also called Melasse in German - but be careful, there are 2 kinds. The very dark, bitter stuff, and the Golden melasse, just like golden syrup, which looks like honey. Sold in most shops in Switzerland, Coop, Migros, etc.

Heh, i've now made 3 batches in the last week and a half, two from Tate & Lyle Golden Syrup, and 1 from Molasses (Migros) syrup earlier this afternoon... and while T&L was of course my favourite as it just tastes heavenly, the Molasses is a decent substitute, and has a darker and deeper toffee-esque flavour.

I guess buying T&L is worth it if you buy in bulk from Britshop.ch to dilute the 9CHF postage costs, but Molasses at a third of the cost and and three quarters of the taste certainly ain't a bad alternative.
