Milk kefir grains available in ZH

I make milk kefir every day, and the grains just multiply!

They have been fermenting in either raw milk from my nearest farm or in organic pasteurised full fat milk.

If you are interested in having some of these, send me a PM. I'd be happy to find a new home for them.

Re: Milk kefir grains available in ZH

I have read that 'you' have to be careful with kefir, as it might be too fat in the end, especially with raw milk, which is good, but might result to be even more. Also make sure you bring to the boil, when using raw straight from the farm if you meant that.

I am using BIO Migro/Coop milk. Makes Quite runny sometimes but still a good bacteria

OH YEAH got loads of free to give. I am in Zurich, let me know.

Hello!

I know this is an older post but I am desperately looking for kefir grains, preferably milk ones. Does anyone from this wonderful thread have some to spare?

I am so sorry for not contacting you for the Kefir. I moved to KantonSZ, started my business and forgot all about it or in other words never gave it a priority. I really apologise. Thanks

Re: Milk kefir grains available in ZH

OK I admit I'm lazy / overworked - pick word as appropriate. But I would like to buy live kefir in a shop instead of making it. Alnatura and Coop have kefir products but they all seem to be pasteurized (which is not exactly kefir...). The nearest live kefir I know in a shop is about 6000km west in Whole Foods. Is there any in Swiss shops?

p.s. If everyone on the thread thinks that I am too fixated on buying kefir and I should just learn to make it then that is good to know too (but right now I don't even know what is a milk kefir grain versus a water kefir grain).

Kefir from Coop and MIGROS are almost like yoghurt - is that what you mean? Real kefir is creamy and runny. But for your info, kefir should be done from pasteurised milk.
Bio Shops ('Muller' on Rennweg in Zurich town, I have seen it only there 500ml).
You could also get from people who actually make kefir themselves, but they would ask for it more, as it does indeed require time to make it and milk I can ask some if you are desperate.
And this would be a GOOD link to read to answer your last question with a hassle free http://www.culturedfoodlife.com/whic...or-milk-kefir/

Re: Milk kefir grains available in ZH

What I mean is that it's possible in the US to buy kefir with live bacteria (lactobacillus *). In Switzerland I have only seen kefirs with no mention of live bacteria from the kefir fermentation. So I assume that the milk is fermented with kefir but then it is pasteurized before it becomes a shop product. IMO that reduces the food value - it's a source of protein, minerals, vitamins like any dairy, but the bacteria are all gone.

Thanks for the link, those kefirs look delicious

Ok, i think i can* guarantee that kefir that i tried from Muller on Renweg street in Zurich centre states that it does have this bacteria and perhaps even others. You should check.
Also, people who do kefir themselves do not pasteurise it of course, they just leave the bacteria to convert the milk into the good stuff, so could get it from them too.
