On some busy days, the best curry is the closest curry. Thanks for the list.

The best Indian restaurant we found in Zurich, is unfortunately no more. Spice Route on Badenerstrasse is defunct, though the website is still up. It is now some kind of Tex-Mex place. Very sad.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Have you realized that there are newcomers to this country who have no clue how to access phonebooks or directories?

Regardless, no more lists from me. Mods & members I 'offended', apologies. I am on this forum to seek and give assistance. Not to make enemies.

Happy Curry Hunting !

Khans in niederdorf is still my favourite. I have had my fair share of curries, so feel like i can spot a good one.

This was one of my favourites also and the manager was very friendly - however - still looking for something similar to home - and this was not it. Fingers crossed - one day "The Serious Curry" shop will open. Spent ten years and lots of dosh trying to find one here in sunny CH. I am biased - was brought up in Nelson Lancashire which has 60 percent Asian population and we were spoilt for choice (and Price)

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

I had a curry from Vulkan the other day near the HB and I swear to Spaghetti Monster I have never eaten such dross in my life. The curry was originally intended to be a Lamb Rogan Josh, but I can only presume that while starting to cook he mistakenly picked up the recipe for Bettys Lamb Hotpot instead, because it miraculously managed to avoid tasting like anything made outside of Manchester. No spices, no taste, no sense whatsoever that you were eating anything which anyone would even loosely describe as Indian.

I will never go there again. Diabolical.

Aghhh that's about 300m away fro mwhere I live, why have I never seen that before! Is it good quality and portions? I have a problem with the portion to price ratio in Zurich... I don't think i've been stuffed yet when paying for an expensive Thai or Indian.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Ok, here's my take on that list of restaurants... A couple of places I don't know anything about. One thing that's obvious is that good restaurants can go bad, and bad ones can improve. Any recommendations more than 3 months old shouldn't be taken as gospel.

Also, it's not always clear what qualifies as an Indian restaurant... for example is it still Indian if they sell thai red/green curries, or noodle dishes? eg. there's a takeaway near my work that is run by a Sri Lankan couple, but they have a Thai cook... so they have dahl on the menu but also noodles...

MAHARANI
Limmattalerstrasse 252
Ecke Wartauweg 18
8049 Zürich-Höngg (Tram 13 Stops right outside)
Tel: 043 300 45 55
Fax: 043 300 45 56
- I don't know anything about this place, sorry

KERALA AT THE RADIOSTUDIO
Indian Restaurant Kerala
Hofwiesenstrasse 188
8057 Zürich
Switzerland
Tel: 044 364 45 77
- ok food. Has a surprisingly expensive buffet some nights. Why are there cameras on the wall outside?

MASALA
Stauffacherstrasse 27
8004 Zürich
Phone: 044/240 03 61
- generally ok. Fairly expensive. Very slow kitchen. Some things such as pilau rice are not on the menu and must be ordered especially.

KING CURRY INDIA
Freyastr. 3,
8004 Zurich
Next to Bahnhof Wiedikon
Tel. +41 43 268 48 28
- these guys have improved their act a lot of late. Presentation is good. Average sized portions. Note that the vindaloo doesn't actually contain aloo... but then again it's probably more in the Goan style.

KHANS
Marktgasse 17,
CH-8001 Zürich
www.khans.ch
Telefon: +41 (0) 44 261 21 82
Tram Nr. 4 or 15 to Haltestelle Rathaus
- another restaurant that has improved of late. Portions are larger than they look. Good ambience and service.

TAJ PALACE HöNGG
Hönggerstrasse 25
8037 Zürich
Tel: +41 44 271 67 20
Fax: +41 44 271 61 62
- I don't know anything about this place, sorry.

HILTL VEG
Sihlstr. 28
Zurich , 8001
- Vegetarian. Unbelievably expensive, and also understaffed. The organic beer is nice and is probably the best thing about the place. The buffet has a large selection but the food there is priced by weight; don't push the takeaway button otherwise you will be charged for the weight of your plate as well.

VULKAN
Klingenstrasse 33
Zürich 8005
Tram 13 to Museum für Gestaltung
- used to have a few thai dishes on the menu. Good selection of dishes. The standard has slipped of late. Don't sit too close to the stairs otherwise everything might smell of disinfectant.

This list is also incomplete. There should eg also be:

FLAVOUR OF INDIA
Kalchengasse 12
8302 Kloten
- has a buffet on Saturday nights.

... and that place up by Albisguetli.

cheers

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

A friend of mine (also English) and my good self went on a crusade 2-3 years ago and tried every Indian restaurant in Zurich, in search of the best Indian curry.

Top of the list for us was Kings Kurry (but still not brilliant IMHO), very closely followed by Korma Sutra. Taj Palace was bottom. I have been several time to Kings Kurry with friends and always had a good meal, lunch time is a buffet.

To make it fair we always ordered a Chicken Jalfrezi (not on the menu at Kings Kurry but they cooked us one anyway, extra plus points for that), pilau rice, peshwari naans and garlic naans.

Masala at Stauffacher is OK if you're in a hurry but the garlic naans are very, very garlicy.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Kerala by RadioStudio (Tram 11) has really good fish curry..it is pretty authentic.

Khans has never disappointed me either...

The rest still need to be tried :-)

Such a shame that you had a bad experience at Vulkan, Richdog.

I've been there 3 times in the past 2 months and had excellent meals all 3 times. But you have given me the motivation to try the others ...

Hi Mister Dude - you are so right. My missus and I just spent last weekend - Honeymoon - in the red light district near the railway station and found two serious curry (Bangladeshi) restaurants in two nights - will not waste my time in Zurich any more.
Have GA will eat! the chappatis /rotis were what I have been searching for - for ages. The beef Jalfrezzi was what I have been missing for a long time. No more Tamil food for me!
And before any sarcy comments - our 4 star hotel was 100 M from this place - nothing kinky! Honest.
