Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

I also went to Tandoori Bbq recently. We had a friend staying and went last Sunday to try it out. Having read so much about it here on EF, we were expecting great things and were not disappointed! Made us wish we could sign up for the Curry night the following week, but we already had plans.
I'd definitely go back & would recommend it. A great time was had by all

Hi Mister Dude - you are so right. My missus and I just spent last weekend - Honeymoon - in the red light district near the railway station and found two serious curry (Bangladeshi) restaurants in two nights - will not waste my time in Zurich any more.
Have GA will eat! the chappatis /rotis were what I have been searching for - for ages. The beef Jalfrezzi was what I have been missing for a long time. No more Tamil food for me!
And before any sarcy comments - our 4 star hotel was 100 M from this place - nothing kinky! Honest.
Do you have the names?

BTW. Geneva has an Indian restaurant with a Michelin star.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Forgot the name (something like Bombay) - must wait for my visa card statement and I will post at least one of them. It was on the Rue De Berne - not far from a bar with some weird gas lamps. Looks small, but in the back they have a 60 seat garden area (couple of tables on the street).
The other one was on Rue De Lucerne - right from the railway station.
Seek kebabs and sauces were good - avoid the Onion Bhajas. But friendly staff and they speak very good English and have worked in UK

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Undoubtedly, the best is my home in Zurich after 20 years learning from my mum and countless reviews I would say it is the best.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Now, that I have been for a month and a half and given how often I lurk around on EF, I guess I owe a review for this thread.

I have to say there have been no pleasant surprises. Indian food in the Zurich area (and I would imagine I can safely extrapolate to the rest of Switzerland) is nowhere near as good as Amsterdam, the UK and of course, India (just comparing to places where I have lived in).

Of course, it is more pricier too but then that is just part of living here.

Now, getting down to the reviews -

Rajasthan (Cham) -- I got a takeout from here; the place was completely deserted though admittedly it was a weekday evening. The starters were good; the rest of the food was fairly poor with portions even tinier.

The rest of them are all in Zurich.

Muniandy Vilas -- would never have been made aware of it if not for this thread. The food was meh; couldn't even finish half of it. Also, note that the (Sri Lankan) lady there only speaks Tamil or German.

Kobal -- the food smells good; the location is good and it has the nice cosy cafe feel. Of course, leave your taste buds at home.

Karachi Bombay takeaway -- decent food @ low prices. There shouldn't be too many surprises positive or negative but not the place that you would be looking to go for a good dining experience.

Tandoori BBQ -- the best of this bunch as noted before by the EF regulars. The curries were good (especially the daal); the starters weren't crisp and the naan and the rice were hard to eat/break but I will give it a pass since I started at 9:15-ish. The buffet is more than reasonably priced for Switzerland. The portions for the items off the menu looked fairly large too. And the interior works well too imo.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

There is a new takeaway opened in Stampfenbachstr. 5 mins from the main station. I think it's associated with King Curry. Open for lunch trade 11.30-14.30 , only takeaway at present but I understand they will provide inside seating shortly.
Anyone tried it yet?

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

It's always difficult to talk about Asian food because people have different expectations.
But are there any Indians on this forum who know a nice little restaurant ? I am not too fond of "international" Indian cuisine, I much prefer the spicier, authentic stuff in India.
I really miss the food from there and really crave a nice southern Thali or chicken curry..

Hi simon_ch
I am an Indian, but I really avoid eating Indian food outside since it has never met my expectations. I would love to cook some authentic Indian food and invite you guys over dinner. Nothing like home cooked Indian food since the magic is in the home made spices

Indian food (curries) generally aren't as spicy as that made in the UK, though they probably are spicier than the average Swiss pussycurry. Go to the Tandoori BBQ next to Paradeplatz and ask for "semi-deadly" or "deadly", it's awesome.

Well those I had anywhere between Mumbai and Tamil Nadu were sometimes exceptionally spicy, very much depends on the dish of course, but they were always very rich with spices and herbs, the (vegetarian) Thalis can be very fiery too.
I remember walking out of a Chicken Curry place in Kerala with my whole t-shirt wet because of the sweat, but I absolutely loved it! And I can eat very spicy, even for Asian/Thai standards. More upmarket places in India seemed to be less spicy though, not sure why that is, as they weren't targetted towards foreigners. But all in all I really, really miss Indian food and that would be a major argument for me going there again.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Agarwal the spice store in Langstrasse (next to hooters), has started serving lunch. Its great for the price vs quaity. Too bad they dont serve dinner. About 9 CHF for a Veggie meal and think couple of more bucks for a non-veg.

BTW they have opened a new bigger store couple of blocks from Langstrasse and from what I heard, they are planning to change the existing one as a permenant restaurant. Cant wait to see how thats going to turn up.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

There is also an Indian take-away at Milchbuck tram station (next to the COOP). It is called Aishwariya. The chicken curry is delicious. The vegetarian dishes are also worth a try. I prefer to have my lunch there whenever I come to Oerlikon.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

I really need to go back to Tandoori BBQ... I have a hankering for a semi-deadly lamb curry... *drools*

Their popadoms and sauces are among the best i've ever had too.
