Hey Viju,

Hope you have a good experience. Try out the Idli Sambhar and Masala Dosa. I love these 2 dishes!
The Flavour of India also has a very good Lamb Vindaloo which I tried early this year

Been there today.

The south Indian dishes you've mentioned are served on Thursdays, was told 'south Indian will be temporarily unavailable because the cook has gone on holiday to India'.

Had the buffet 25 CHF. There were 2 veg curry sauces spinach and lentils(was ok), mixed veg curry, tandoori chicken(good), lamb curry(good) and prawn curry(excellent), mango pickle(excellent), chutneys(good), curd, salad(excellent), pappadom and rice(good).
__________________________________________________ _______________

P.S
Different kinds of buffets on different days. Please check website or phone them before you go.
Just one point. You apparently know some of the Indian cooks and restauranteurs in the region. So please tell them not to translate Prawn into German by "Garnelen" but by "Crevetten"/"Crevettes". Nobody in Zürich eats "Garnelen" but quite many people eat Crevette (cröwätte) !

If its the Swiss you were talking about, i dont think Swiss restaurants or takeaways serving Indian food use the cheapest stuff available. The spices dont cost that much compared to other ingredients. That they do not(normally) cook authentic Indian food as well as Indians is true however, which i feel is because they have not endeavoured to do enough research and also due to their lack of experience.
Many English celebrity and ordinary chefs do know to cook authentic Indian food and even experiment and go on to make their own variations.
Swiss restaurants serving Indian food
- use the mildest variety of curry around
- use heavy amounts of cream and milk
- use the curry only in haemopotic dosages
- use Safran to create a yellow colour

and it is not due to lack of research nor of experience but just in order
to have something exotic on the menu and to please the ordinary Spiessbürger in search for something "special". THIS is the real reason to serve "Baby Curry". To give you an example. I sampled such a baby curry in a particular place twice and after the second trial got into a talk with the chief and complained to her about her baby curry. When I was there, many months later, she came to the table and asked me "you would like a REAL lamb-curry this time". I approved and she told me "you will be astonished" and what I got was the "real thing" indeed. She usually had guest from the football place nearby and the Hallenbad around the corner, and had to take care of them. So what. On commercial considerations she of course got it right. And she assured me that for herself and her husband she NEVER serves that baby-curry but always the real thing.

I (..and most of my friends) certainly disagree with this

We've had many pathetic experiences with Maharani. Although we've ended up there most of the times as its around the corner for me too.

I'd rather recommend (in the order mentioned):
  1. Tandoor Haus - www.tandoorhaus.com
  2. Kings Kurry (Too costly though ...) http://www.kingskurry.ch/
  3. House Of India http://www.houseofindia.ch/
  4. Vulkan - http://www.restaurant-vulkan.ch/
  5. Bombay Karachi (Lunch buffet / take away) - Stampfenbachstrasse 32
  6. Sher-E-Punjab (Ready meals or take-away) - Silhfeldstrasse 45 8003 Zürich (Lochergut tram stop Tram 2/3)
Hope this is helpful ..!

Cheers,
CompCode
Looks as if the "House of India" is in the place where there for many years was an excellent Persian restaurant

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Went with a mate of mine to Tandoori BBQ last night after many pints at the Lion pub.

It was a very good meal and probably the best curry I've had in Zürich so far.

We ordered the Mixed Vegi Starter platter and the samosas and pakoras were very good accompanied by chutneys and pickles.

For mains we had Chicken Jalfrezi and Ghosht Palak. Both were very good, tasted like home cooking and well spiced. Very enjoyable.

We asked for the food to be prepared HOT British style but I think the chef didn't think we could handle it once he saw my mate sweating after the starter. It came out mild but luckily I'd taken my own green chillies and they gave us that hot chilli kick.

The rice was decent and came complimentary with the curries. The buttered Naan was good but not great. I much prefer the Naan at the Vulkan restaurant.

The service was great. The waitress, who was German, was very friendly and took care of us well. It was very empty though. We were the first table at 8:30pm and by the time we'd left, only 2 more tables got occupied.

I'll definitely be back.

1 Starter, 2 Mains, 1 Naan, 4 beers = 110 francs.

Considering Pizzas in restaurants cost 25 francs, the dishes here are well worth it.

You can see it from the Tram itself.
If you are going to Paradeplatz, then, its on the right side.
very near to tschibo

I think i saw two huge flames that was lit outside the restaurant.
So, fairly easy to spot.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Tibet is almost India right?

I went to the Tibetan restaurant Mandala between Kreutzplatz and Seefeldstrasse.
Not bad for a change of scenery. Best to go in a small group.
Authentic side dishes, that were unfamiliar to me.
Interesting Tibetan style, cosy, friendly, quiet, portions slightly on the small side, not much atmosphere when I was there midweek.

Free Mandala! Oh he is free erm....Free Tibet!

I think it's been open a few months Higgbaby. You can definitely see it from the Tram.
I remember the opening was in May or June. Definitely a place to keep in mind.

Enjoy!

Noticed only because I happened to meet a chick before the place

South Indian Restaurant, Oerlikon

Been to a South Indian restaurant at Oerlikon.

MADRAS CURRY HOUSE
Franklinstrasse 6
8050 Zürich/ZH
043 288 54 80
http://tel.search.ch/zuerich/frankli...-house.en.html

The best South Indian food i have eaten in a long time. Its as good as the food i have eaten in India. Its Tamilnadu cuisine. They have Tamilnadu and Kerala Thalis. Their Biryani was excellent (not the kind of unauthentic Biryani you get at Kings Kurry). You can get authentic Idly, Dosa, Vada etc. Open from 8 Am to 9:30 PM.

P.S
Old building, heart of old Oerlikon, so dont expect the level of ambience of a Kerala or a Kings Kurry.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

It was a great dinner! The service was great! The waiter we received was new there and spoke no German !!! Fantastic! A Great start to the meal. The menu is almost like Restaurant Vulkan as is the décor and it's very nice.

Starters:
Aap ki pasand ki Chaat - A tangy and sharp salad with Chicken. It was very tasty and it was something my guests had never tasted before.
Papad - We ordered Papad but I asked for it to be Masala Papad not plain, with chopped tomatoes, onions, and coriander on top and eventhough it was not on the menu, they did it for me. I love Papad with all the dips and chutneys.
Seekh Tak a Tak - Delicious minced Lamb kebabs baked in the tandoor served in a tomato and onion gravy. Delicious.

Mains:
Tandoori Murg - NOT on the Menu eventhough stated on the web site. Ordered Murg Tika instead.
Murg Tikka - Juicy, spicy, aromatic tandoori grilled boneless Chicken. Delicious with the assorted dippings.
Murg Korma Shahjahani - Chicken cooked in a well flavoured, well spiced saffron gravy. It was excellent and the most flavourful dish we ate there.
Gosht Lababdar - Grilled Lamb in a rich tomato onion gravy. Very very nice. Really enjoyed it.
Gosht Shahi Korma - Lamb in a creamy, mild, saffron gravy. Loved the saffron and the creaminess of this dish.

Naan - Buttered Naan. My favourite bread in the world.
Plain rice - You can't beat basmati.

Dessert:

Mango Kulfi - My guests liked it but I didn't as I make it much better. The Mango flavour tasted canned or preserved and not fresh.

All in All, the Meal was really excellent. The Service was brilliant, the food excellent and the setting was perfect. I'm always a little hesitant at taking guests to Indian places as the Indian curry is not as popular or well known in Switzerland or mainland Europe as it is in the UK, however, they received it very well and enjoyed it thoroughly. I did have a good chuckle at watching people eat a Naan with a fork and knife, but I guess people do the same with Sandwiches or Burgers.

The place was very busy, I suppose being a Saturday night. I would strongly advise reserving a table in advance. Several tables had second seatings. Quite a few tables were occupied by Indians, which is always a good sign. I've been to Vulkan in Zürich several times and the standards are always good and consistent. To receive the same service and food from Tandoor impressed me. Consistency is what restaurants lack these days, but this place ha sit.

For those of you that long for real spicy curries, talk to the chef or the manager and they will do it for you. I did and they did.

Dinner for 4, 6 Kingfisher Beers, 2 Glasses White Wine, 2 Bottles Water, 1 Espresso : 230 Chf.

Well worth it.
