Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

I just this evening was in the "Madras Curry Haus" on Franklinstr. 6 in Zürich Oerlikon. Limited choice, but really good at relatively low prices for Zurich standards. A good Lamb Masala and a small 2,5dl bottle of Beaujolais made together CHF 36.-- .

Well, that link indeed is interesting, and may save me a lot of money.

Reminds me of "Khan Restaurant" in Oberdorfstrasse. Which has a bad choice of meals, far too mild meals (apparently to please the "Züriberg-Damen") and nothing really impressive except the price-level. There is an Indian place at Bahnhof Wiedikon. Really good cuisine, but what about a bit of airconditioning or regularily allowing some fresh air into the place ? It stinks, and this is spoiling the place. Such things really suck .....

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Last week we went to the Vulkan (on Klingenstrasse). The food was ok but it was an off day for the waiters, as the service was pretty slack. It took a while for the menus to turn up, and longer for the guy to come around to take our orders. We ordered two drinks; one of the waiters opened two bottles and left them on the other side of the bar and went off to do something else. Twenty minutes later he hadn't returned to our table so I had to remind him again. A bit later we ordered two more drinks and the same thing happened again... There were only two waiters working; the manager turned up every so often, mainly to lecture them.

The place wasn't hugely busy. There was a couple at the table next to us. When they asked for the bill, the bill for another table turned up. A little bit later we asked for our bill, and we got the bill of the table that was next to us... While we were there a Mosi's courier turned up and picked up a delivery. The phone rang about 20 minutes later and we heard the manager talking to them; it was a customer from Mosi's, complaining that the wrong dish had been delivered.

On Tuesday we went to Tandoor, on Stockerstrasse. This was a much better experience compared to eg the Vulkan. We asked for a couple of menu customisations (eg no salt) that meant that everything had to be cooked from scratch. The food and service were great :-)

Cheers for the review on Vulkan Bubbles. It's such a shame that you received such terrible service and had a less than average experience as I often recommend the place. I suppose I've been lucky everytime I've been there and perhaps the fact that I have gotten to know the manager helps. On busy nights, the service is not that great but to receive bad service on a quiet night is no excuse. I'll check out Tandoor next.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Tandoor and Vulkan are the two places I recommend. Service much better the former.

But I usually take people to the cheap Lanka joints. 1/4 the price for some homestyle S Indian curry.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

I've had very good food at the Vulkan. Some curries were very good where as some were average, just as in any other restaurant. Over the visits, I've learnt what to order and consistently get the taste I expect.

Mind you, the best curry is when I cook .

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Yeah, the best curry was what I cooked Monday night. Prawn curry (Jaffna style), lentils, spinach, carrot/yogurt salad (almost raita); all over red rice. The leftovers last night with the addition of some spiced tapioca chips were even better (like a good pasta, a good curry is always better the next day).

I (..and most of my friends) certainly disagree with this

We've had many pathetic experiences with Maharani. Although we've ended up there most of the times as its around the corner for me too.

I'd rather recommend (in the order mentioned):
  1. Tandoor Haus - www.tandoorhaus.com
  2. Kings Kurry (Too costly though ...) http://www.kingskurry.ch/
  3. House Of India http://www.houseofindia.ch/
  4. Vulkan - http://www.restaurant-vulkan.ch/ [NOT - RECOMMENDED]
  5. Bombay Karachi (Lunch buffet / take away) - Stampfenbachstrasse 32
  6. Sher-E-Punjab (Ready meals or take-away) - Silhfeldstrasse 45 8003 Zürich (Lochergut tram stop Tram 2/3)
Hope this is helpful ..!

Cheers,
CompCode
I would like to remove my old recommendation about Vulkan restaurant. Anyways, it was on number 3 for me ..but now its out of list. The below incidents lead me to come back to English Forum and post this new message:

1. The last few visits to Vulkan revealed the poor service, poor taste of food and above all - harsh treatment. The waiter started shouting (literally) when we asked for tap-water (we knew from an earlier incident that vulkan even charges for tap-water but still orders as one of us didn't like taste of bottled water). I've got similar feedback from my friends about degrading quality and service at Vulkan.

2. [Main Reason] We had a get-together few days ago with folks at job. We planned for Indian food as dinner (Buffet). Some of us gathered quotes from Vulkan, Tandoor & Masala by calling them. We zeroed in on not choosing Vulkan due to past bad experiences and high prices quoted. None of us had committed any deal with Vulkan (we're not even sure of our exact date that time). We left our contact number with him as he politely asked for it. To our surprise, few days later we got a call from Vulkan owner (or manager) threatening one of us with police complaint. He blamed us for not turning up for arranged buffet and that he was waiting for us with all the food prepared. This was really hard to believe for us, as none of us ever committed anything - all we did was asking his quotes for menu and discussed about possible dates, when the restaurant is available. We closed the call with an agreement that we'll call again to confirm dates and headcount, if we're interested.
We're really surprised that to what extent can these people go looking for a quick money. I'd recommend to avoid Vulkan & in case planning for a party there - go on-record - exchange emails etc.

Cheers,
CompCode

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

The best indian Restaurant in Zurich is by far Magic Masala (Near Bellevue, behind the Starbuck).

Magic Masala
Kruggasse 4
8001 Zürich, Schweiz
043 243 65 45

Everything is cooked freshly and independently and therefore very personalized (as spicy as you can tolerate to as mild as posible). The prices are reasonable for switzerland.

Enjoy!!!

The waiters almost always seem on off days, especially for Indian visitors I guess. When we went there (and that was like 6 months ago), we waited 1 hour for our starters to arrive. After 30 minutes of our ordering we started asking the 1 waiter how long it'd take etc, and then he arrived with a stack of plates, asked us to pass around the table - made us wait another 30 minutes..
The food was very nice. One of the only places in Zurich which served Indian food as it should taste - not slathered in cream or bland without any spices!
Though we thoroughly enjoyed the food, the service was pathetic to say the least. An order of lassi took 20 minutes!
Why can't there be a nice desi restaurant with good real Indian food and good service? The one that closed down in Schauffhausen was one such place I think. Dunno why it closed though

... and how long have you worked there?

I've eaten at Magic Masala (it's round the corner from where I used to live) and I have to say it was pretty dreadful. Great spoonfuls of raw asafoetida in the salty lassi... either that or the yogurt had gone off. Either way it was undrinkable.

Raita was homemade and decent, mango chutney was storebought (Patak's) and decent. Main dishes were adequate but not outstanding. (If you do go, note that the portions although "reasonably priced" are quite small: you'll almost certainly need to order starters and/or more than one curry per person dining.)

When we raised the fetid-lassi issue with our waiter, rather than addressing our complaint he became very defensive and demanded to know where we were from. "Oh, then you wouldn't know what real lassi tastes like..."

Would not go again, would not recommend.

GO to Tandoori BBQ. THe ambience may not be approaching Indian, but the food speaks for itself imo, i've never not enjoyed a curry there, and I am fussy with curries in general.

Went to Vulkan once and it was like lamb stew, atrocious.

Haven't tried it yet, but will endeavour to do so this week and report back.
