Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

I passed by what appears to be a new restaurant near Central. Not a typical curry restaurant but vegetarian Ayurvedic restaurant. It is my cup of tea so I will be checking it out soon.
Googling revealed more information-

"Khan is ok but I never know what to expect. They seem to keep changing management."

The management in Khans has never changed. Nor has the food apart from the specials. Izi, the spectacular hostess (manageress) has left but apart from missing her personal touch, the chef still comes out to greet guests and the standard of the food IMO hasn't changed. I had a great meal there tonight and would be willing to stick my neck out to recommend it.

I'm not an expert on the different regions of Indian food i just know i can take guests there without worrying that the Chef is having an off night.
Tried tried and tested.
I went there last night, and I can tell you the Chef was having an off night. The standards are very low, unless you come there with a regular customer. The service staff was unfriendly and generally overbearing. The food was cold (obviously prepared in advance) and it arrived literally 5 minutes after we ordered and all at once. Do yourself a favor and do not consider going there.

Mmmmm . . . ok.

Although the menu includes southern Indian classics like dosas and idly with sambhar, when we clued the waiter, it turned out the chef was from northern India.

Despite this, because I hadn't seen them in Zürich before I went for idly and then a dosa.

Before this we had a sharing plate of tandoori chicken, pakoras, samosas etc. The tandoori stuff, especially, lacked heart. When the waiter asked us about it we said that we expected more flavour. He interpreted this as heat but we tried to explain that this wasn't the whole story.

The idly itself lacked delicacy and the sambhar was uninteresting. This was a disappointing dish.

The dosa itself was ok, the filling ok, but again lacking guts.

Maybe I've just been spoiled and I can't step down and appreciate this stuff.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Wolli, don't forget Mundial. Great quality and unbeatable for prices/serving size. A Panjabi friend of mine was extolling Tandoori BBQ to me yesterday, of no surprise to me, and also asking me when she could join me at the famous Mundial buffet.

I have yet to try Raja Bongo and have been meaning to. But to be honest, the cheap Lankan joints and mid-priced Indian holes are more to my liking.

Khans: again a thumbs down. Corroborated by above N Indian friend. It's what we would call a restaurant for white people: overpriced, showy, and weak recipes.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

I was at Tandoori BBQ again and can vouch for it: great food, great variety and super price (lunch) 25 CHF all you can eat buffet, less for veg-only. Takeway is also a steal...you can load up with enough food for 3 meals in one container!

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

So my friend, whose opinion I trust for food, went to Khan's yesterday. He said it was pretty good and fresh food (contradicting my previous impression stated above)

Starting in October, they'll have special Mondays with a fixed price buffet (50chf) featuring food from specific Indian regions.

October: Kashmir and North West Frontier.
November: Delhi and the north
December: Rajastan and central india
January: Hyderabad and east india
February: Goa and west india
March: Kerala and south india

Although I am used to paying 25chf for the buffet at Mundial, 50chf is typical for Zurich.

50 seems very steep.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Kahns is very prissy and not great. It's actually one of those places that is good the first time you go, but the concept wears out fast, and you're left with a small, over priced menu that isn't that exciting. It lacks the comfort of a proper English or Subcontinent "Indian".

EDIT: I love the idea of the themed buffets that HB mentions and I'll probably visit one - I just wish they were somewhere else.

I agree, I've been there once and the food is alright...but as you said, it seems rather prissy and crammed.

Very steep, considering Tandoori BBQ is 38CHF for all you can eat!

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

We often go to the Milchbuck indian (forgot the name). It's average and not that expensive but has that kitch feel of the sort of "Indians" you used to get in London in the 80s and still do in the home counties. Fun!

Yeah, I am considering trying one of the themed buffets. Considering ... as it sounds like a cool concept that may override my general opinion of the place. Price is still too high.

Wolli, you keep posting that list, but isn't the Isle of India actually called the Ristorante Pizzeria Verona these days...?

Or is Pizza Gorgonzola really an asian dish?

I can hereby confirm, happening to live very close that very street, that there is no Indian restaurant of that name on there. If there was, I would already be intimately acquainted with it.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

I would like to recommend a very nice homely Indian Restaurant in Zürich which I am sure most of you may not have even heard of.

This place is called "Flavor of India".
Its in Kloten.
Here is the link.

As you can see from the website, Its not a fancy place. Just a small mom and pop's kind of joint. I know the owners from being a frequent visitor (since its quite close to where I live).
But what I can say is that the food is great, very close to authentic Indian food. The owners are really nice people, and make a personal effort to cater to your tastes.

If you get a chance, give this place a try. I am sure you will not be disappointed.

PS: I have no affiliation to this place, other than the fact that I know the owners from frequenting the place quite a bit.
