3 of us went to the Masala in Stauffacher last night and had a very pleasant experience. First impressions were good, restaurant looks nice, very nice cutlery and wine glasses too!

The food was made and served nice and quickly, and tasted very nice and the service was super friendly and attentive.

We had Chicken tikka massala, tandoori Lamb special, Tandoori mixed grill, pea-rice and different nans. Had 3 or 4 different starters, and to follow Mango Lassi and Mango mousse. Received an Amis Bouche to start, compliments of the chef.

Of course not as spicy as in the UK, but that doesn't matter when it tastes great - I LOVE hot and spicy food, but Indian doesn't have to be spicy to qualify it!

Definately recommend it and will be going back.
Their Lamb Vindaloo for example is as spicy as in the UK if YOU ASK them for it.

Has anyone been to Ravi's? I'm supposed to be going there soon.

www.ravis.ch
Ravi Taneja, the founder of this restaurant, was the son of a restaurant owner in Bombay who for a while worked with Air India, first in Bombay and then in Zurich, until upon having got the required permissions left Air India and joined airfreight forwarder Fracht AG and then went on to establish ATC Air Transport Consultants (an aircargo brokerage). He later on sold ATC to the staff and started his activities in the gastronomy sector.

As he in the early days of his restaurant (we met just by chance outside his restaurant) told me, the cuisine of his restaurant is mild by Indian standards, but really genuine.

And yes, the quality there really is good

I DID ASK THEM, and we'd already talked about where i was from etc but it still wasn't as hot as it would have been in the UK - as I stated, no problem whatsoever as it tasted great and that was what was important to me!

In my case it IS. And I learnt to know Indian cuisine in London, which to the best of my knowledge still is in the U.K.

Chalet India, right outside Horgen Oberdorf Station (note, not the Horgen bahnhof down by the lake), is excellent. Nice people, nice food.
Hey peterg, could you tell us what you ordered and how each dish was? Is the cuisine mild, medium or spicy?

Meanwhile I am off to Restaurant Tandoor in Winterthur for a buffet lunch today! I believe they have a buffet. Will tell yol how it was ...

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Last night we ordered in from Restaurant Swaad here is Zurich.
We paid CHF 83 for the following:
2 x Garlic Naans
2 x Rice with cumin
1 x Lamb Vindaloo
1 x Lamb Korma

We haven't ordered from or eaten there before and thought the portions would probably be tiny and the quality not so great. Boy were we wrong
The food was delicious and the portions were huge!. I could only eat half of mine and my husband ate about 3/4 of his. Quality is comparable to Vulcan (so that you hove an idea of what to expect).

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Hi there,
I don't know if this is really best, but indian Palace (@ Milchbuck stop) is very good. The guys are really gentle and the ambient is OK. Decoration a bit kitsch, but the Indian musik is fine. Dishes are well served and reasonable in their sizes. (ONly bad point: wine offer is really poor!)
ALso: buffet during lunch!

Nice to know that the kept up the standard they had when opening their place.

The wine offer however was poor already then.

You speak about the owner ? If so, while his cooking is 100% Indian, he himself possibly only is 50% Indian. Why not ?
Do not get confused about the owner of chalet India he is 100% Indian and he is himself the kitchen chef .that means every curry comes to you from his hands .

Re: Tips for an indian restaurant in ZH

Hello,

what would be the best indian restaurant to visit on a Sunday evening?
I have seen many of the top recommendations do not remain open.

Thanks!

Patrick

Certainly not for a dinner, but very nice for a quick lunch: Aggarwal's, in Langstrasse, just after the Hooper. Excellent, simple and cheap. No pretentious. Worth a try.

Hi!

I was driving by the restaurant this morning and am thinking about giving it a go for lunch. I read on google that they have a lunch buffet? Their website does not mention either a buffet or a lunch menu... I know it's close to the area where quite some of this forum's members work, so I give the long shot a try: Has anyone been to Swaad over lunch? It's the ex-thai-buffet place close to Uetlihof...

Thanks!

Well the Indian curry's are available but its really very costly. You can buy curry / pastes from shop Barkat near Schmedi Wedikon.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Previously I said kings kurry was best, but they really went down hill so changed to Masala in Stauffacher for 2 years. However the last 3 occasions it has been very disappointing - maybe a new chef, certainly new waiters. The food is just not as good.

So we decided to give Kerala a chance (Radiostudio tram stop) and went twice in 3 weeks. The food was very good, very large portions and service good. The restaurant was busy which was also a good sign. I'll be going again....

Indeed, this is my favourite method! Shan spice packs (For Indian/Pakistan Curries)

Hi everyone, i can recommend Tandoor Oven near Oerlikon - delicious food, the owner was lovely and I think I can be a good judge of a great curry being of Indian origin myself!!

Tried this the other day, and very good it was too. Bar at the front, and a dining room with a great view over Lake Zurich (albeit from halfway up the hill, it's not located near the lake) at the back.
