Have u tried masala restaurant in stauffacher ... It's quiet authentic !!!

Masala and the Tandoori-BBQ are in my view the two best. But you ought to give a visit to the Raja Bongo
http://www.rajabongo.com/home.html
which has been the first Indian restaurant in Zürich, originally in 1978 in the Coronado Hotel, but then thrown out by the hotel. and re-opened in 1980 at its present place

When I after a 3month stay there, returned from London, the only Indian place within 500 kms was the Maharaja on the Rue de Mont Blanc in Geneva, which in the 1980ies relocated to Weststrasse in Zürich but then closed when the owner retired.

The owner of the Raja Bongo insists that his cuisine is the one of his home region in India

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Masala is ok but I`ve discovered a great Asian shop in Zuri West and now make my own currys and are much more satisfying.

I basically got fed up of paying crazy prices for an at best average curry

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

If you call 4.50 CHF for a Samosa good!!

Maharanis is probably the best in Zürich-the tour operators bring all the indians there-so it must be good. But the prices are bloody crazy!

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Since finally bothering to track down this shop http://aggarwalfood.com/shops/aggarwal-shop-in-zerich/
I simply make my own. I find the quality and price just not worth it here.

Richdog posted a useful thread recently for would be Indian chefs to get started too ***The Great Big Indian Cooking Thread*** He also lists an alternative Indian supermarket that I have no tried out yet.

I would add cinnamon sticks and bay leaves to your standard stock cupboard supplies on top of everything he lists as well as mustard seeds.

Make a lot, it gets better as the days pass.

I do go to the Tandoori BBQ on Stockerstrasse for the odd buffet lunch, as the lamb rogan josh when it's on is almost as good as my own.

Don't know about that but when I first went to find the supermarket I was looking for a langstrasse addresses but realised its actually on Kernstrasse. The veg in there is ridiculously cheap compared to coop, migros and co too. Plus those humongous black tiger prawns,, yom yom yom

While it's not in Zurich, the Indian restaurant Sitara in Konstanz is very much worth the trip. Far better than anything I've found in Zurich.

Last time I was in Konztanz I went there to check it out and walked away as soon as I saw those laughable prices. I mean really, for one of the worlds most cost-effective and cheapest-ingredient cusines, they really do their best to charge ridiculous prices. It was as expensive or almost more so than Zurich.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

well I guess if the portions are as big as what they show on the homepage then one could order maybe 4 or 5 different dishes and shared between 2 people would not end up so pricey. Looking at the pictures on their home page the food looks very good. Well I think that alot of these Indian restaurant owners simply see money, money when they come here.

Indeed, I certainly don't blame them if there's a market for it... but personally I won't pay that kind of money for it.

Absolutely. And it doesn't only apply to Indian restaurants. I still can't believe that Pizzas cost 20 bucks. If anyone is making money, Pizza places are.

Curries are more labor intensive to produce and have more needed ingredients than several other similarly priced cuisines.

And you think that only applies to Indian restaurant owners? Come on, you can't be serious.

I would definitely have to agree with you here. I've eaten there and enjoyed my meal, and yes the portions are large. But the prices are high, almost similar to Swiss prices.

But apparently, we (Swiss residents) only have ourselves to blame for the prices. I was chatting to the restaurant waiter and he told me that since so many Swiss people cross the border to shop & dine in Konstanz, a lot of the places have upped their prices.

Personally, I hate driving on a full stomach so I won't be having any big meals in Konstanz any more. A snack will suffice.
