Not being funny Danny but as far as I could tell he was from Manchester plus my few years ago (how time flies) was probably 8-9. Anyway he did throw in a good few cognacs and a good gab.

maybe a new owner took over but obviously i did not meet the 'real' owner since you say he was from manchester.

Danny, I'm trying to be politically correct here, he spoke with an accent both Northern English and slightly Indian.

N.B Don't jump on me, I'm new to the internet world and Forum use, but the man was originally from Asia.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

today i had the "I would fancy an indian meal tonight but which one is any good" conversation with the gf.

after the conversation and reading this thread, settled on khans. its the only one where i actually said after the meal that i wouldnt mind coming back.... that was about five years ago mind you. all other indian options i have tried have only made me want to never go back, including a fair number of disasters (onion rings = onion bhajis??? i think not!)

i myself used to live next to brick lane, and there were plenty of good options, and still a couple. just a shame that the last few years have seen the emergence of the man on the doors trying to get you to come in. i never liked that, never will. but because it somehow works, it wont stop.

lets hope khans does that floppy nan i was talking about earlier.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

If it is authentic South Indian food that's you are after (rather than British "Indian"), Kerela's the place. On par with the Rasa restaurants in London. The chef's from Kerela.

Muniandy Villas, Zweierstasse 55 for a good , cheap indian meal ( although technically Sri Lankan but close to South Indian )
seconded, was my fave takeaway for a curry round'about midnight.

Almost exclusively frequented by Tamils, which to me is an indicator that it's "homecooking good".

Most indian restaurants in Zurich have those on the menu. You would just have to read this thread to see a full discussion on them all

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Used to go for lunch to the Indian above Straussenverkaursamt (not far from CS Uetlihof).

They do/did a lunch-time buffet which is not bad. Never been there in the evening though.

They were closed (for Holidays I hope) last time I went up there.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Theres a Sri Lankan \ Tamil restaurant cum Grocery store in Baden Opposite the Trafo.
Its a modest place with reasonably priced food.

I cant comment on the menu in general because every time I've been there all I've had is the Kottu Roti. It is excellent and absolutely authentic.

I get flak about patronizing a Tamil restaurant,
(the tigers supposedly receive a large chunk of their financing by the Expat Tamils running businesses in Europe blah blah etc... )
by certain Sinhalese in my life but its too good to resist.

The best Indian curry in Laufenburg?

This is not Zurich, but last night my wife and I went to the indian restaurant in laufenburg. It is across from the railway station.
Brilliant! Only complaint was that the chilli sauce with the starters was the sweet Thai chill bottled stuff - no lime pickle or Raiti etc.
http://www.kaschmir-laufenburg.ch/

The chicken vindaloo was vey tasty - next time I will ask for a bit more "Scharfness" and take my Lime pickle with me.
My wife had a lamb K???? - this was well tasty.
Nan Bread also quite nice - but not too fluffy and burnt (the way i like it)

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Great response from everyone and a wide range of restaurants I will need to dine at before I find my favourite! Thank you all.

As you are all well aware, Naan bread and Tandoori chicken are baked in a traditional Tandoor clay oven. Can a Tandoor be bought anywhere in Zurich? Do any of you know of such a shop?

I think they are fantastic ovens and with only a little bit of charcoal, produce and retain an excellent amount of heat and are so easy to use. Also good to have on a cold day.

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

I heard a while back that they are not allowed in a commercial kitchen for hygiene reasons. This is the reason why most indian restaurants here have no tandoor for their tandoori chicken and naan.

I'm not sure if this is still the case, but certainly restaurant naans have not improved much ...

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

What a shame ! I don't think its possible to have a proper naan if not baked in a tandoor.

As a chef, to me its the same argument between charcoal vs. gas BBQ's.
If its not done on charcoal, it will not taste as good. Sure there are lots of short cuts, but you just can't beat the flavour of charcoal!

Lets hope I can find a real tandoor restaurant out there.
How can Tandoor Haus be called that if they don't have a tandoor?

Re: The best Indian curry in Zurich?

Intersting if this is not allowed in a commercial kitchen.

I've seen many good pizza places with 'clay' style ovens (like Grottino's Aemtlerstrasse). So if these are allowed, why not a Tandoor ??
