The final demise of Coke Light?

I have been drinking Coke light every day for decades - since the advent of Coke Zero, I still do - until this week. Whenever I stop drinking beer for a month each year (Corona), my replacement is always Coke Light

Now Volg has stopped selling 50 CL PET bottles of Coke Light, the CO-OP in Baden has / had 2 x 6 packs left on discount until I just bought them both and the Kiosk seems to have run out.

My son says he has heard a rumour about some cancer scare regarding my tipple - or is it some marketing initiative? Anyone have any inside info on this?

On principle, I am not going to drink Coke Zero - nothing to do with the taste, just that I do not like been manipulated. A few years ago, there were also rumours about discontinuing Coke Light, but this did not materialise. In my local restaurant, they still have the glass bottles - but you do not see these in the shops (much tastier than the PET in my opinion)

I think that I will just have to get used to the Kiosk OK stuff (cheaper and still has a kick).

I can't help but feel that just switching to another replacement fizzy drink from the same brand shows that their manipulation of you is 100% successful

Re: The final demise of Coke Light?

I was told that Coke Light was marketed for women, but many men enjoyed it so they just rebranded it as Coke Zero as Coke Light for men.

No proof of this, and I'm sure this is more of an urban legend, but I do have Swiss friends who won't let me drink Coke Light around them, they make a fuss about it and are uncomfortable with it.

As opposed to Coke Light which is a pure bio product that flows naturally from deep under the Earth's crust and is captured in a bottling plant near the Nantahala National Forest north of Atlanta?

It's soda. Water, sugar and a bunch of flavoring with colors and crap thrown in to give you a buzz.

Coke zero tastes waaaaay better than Coke light! The chemical aftertaste of the light version stays in my mouth for ages, yeuark!

I agree for Switzerland. Back in the UK I like diet coke more than coke zero though.

Re: The final demise of Coke Light?

Whilst regular coke is pretty bad for you, by virtue simply being a sugar vehicle, I think the light and zero stuff is even worse - I simply don't trust the additives that make something without sugar taste sweet. I will only drink the regular stuff, preferably the non-high fructose corn syrup stuff, sparingly.

It's simple: Cola Zero is basically Cola Light with an improved taste.

Cola Light was designed for women (hence all the ads of women watching muscled hunks drink it), and as such men didn't buy into it, thus limiting the selling power.

Cola Zero is targeted at both sexes and sells like crazy, so it isn't rocket science as to why Light is disappearing off of the shelves, and you can't expect Cola to keep an unprofitable brand running just for the sake of pleasing its minority of die-hard consumers. There's no "conspiracy" or "manipulation" (heh) involved, just a simple and very practical business decision.

Coke Light is not available since 20 years. On 1 October 1994, Coca Cola stopped producing it. You were just lucky to be living in Aargau, which is 20 years behind, but now also face this reality.

Enjoy the last 5 days!

The final demise of Coke Light?

Manipulated to only drink Coke Zero - I am diabetic and my drinks are limited - just so happens I like the taste of Coke Light. Just did not like the unannounced way they discontinue the brand.

Anyhow, no big deal - I like any "flavour" of gassy water, so I will survive.

"Unannounced"? Do you expect them to spend a multiple hundreds of thousands on a worldwide advert to the tiny proportion of outraged customers that really care about it? What an amusingly unrealistic notion.

to be fair, these sites don't give the impression of the product being phased out:

Re: The final demise of Coke Light?

Oooh, I LOVES my coke, I do!

I consider myself a connoisseur of cola, I drink loads of it both diet and non-diet!

In my opinion coke light is the yuckiest one of them all, tied with pepsi light. The "zero" version (or "max" for pepsi) is the only diet version I would bother with! I'd noticed for several years in the UK the light versions had been dwindling in favour of zero and max. I used to wonder if I personally had anything to do with it as pretty sure I keep both companies in business ha!

I prefer coca-cola to pepsi but coca-cola need to pull their finger out, they've fallen behind with the diet version of cherry cola. Cherry pepsi max is the don. Sadly I haven't found it anywhere in Switzerland Coke's diet cherry coke is the most minging soda I have ever tasted and while cherry coke zero is palatable, it's got nothing on cherry pepsi max...

Of all the cheaper/less-known brands, I find the sugary versions are not-bad-imitations but all the diet versions suck.

Conclusion, it must be difficult to make good diet cola. The formula must be very tricky as so many of them are horrible... pepsi have nailed it though

(Just in case any of you gaf! )

Cannot speak for anyone else, but it would have been nice - I could have stocked up.

Maybe I will just start drinking beer again - I cannot see Corona Zero taking over Corona Extra.

But who knows!

Re: The final demise of Coke Light?

We all know these popular products are taken away so they can reemerge a few years later as "Classic", and in the interim create a hole in market to be filled by new product. In this casefinal-demise-coke-light-image.jpg

I haven't tasted it but my daughter said it was "nice" in a rather unconvinced way. It isn't necessarily low-cal (approx 70cal/500 bottle), for those who down light drinks as if they were caloric equiv of water.
