What food item is in the field?

Ok EF folks- What food is in this pile in the field? Earlier this summer it was in/near fields and fields of beautiful sunflowers. I'm guessing some kind of root vegetable? At first I thought maybe some kind of potato but they seem awfully big for potatoes. Educate me!

Ps. Don't worry--- the driver of the car wasn't driving AND taking photos. I passed my camera to them to snap the photo as the light was red.

Re: What food item is in the field?

And most of the beets will be turned into CH sugar. The processing sites are in the Swiss German area but I can't remember where exactly (in Aarberg and Fraue feld - there might be others) You will see lots of freight cars from our area that are full of beets that are off for processing.

Re: What food item is in the field?

Don't think it's mangel-wurzel - more likely to be wurzel gummidge, than that.

(It's sugar beet really)

Re: What food item is in the field?

Thanks for all of the replies and for filling in the missing info. I did a search and came across a few recipes using sugar beets. Wondering if it is worth a try? Do CH folks ever eat them or are they mostly set aside for sugar production and cow feed?

If you have ever had them how were they prepared?

Good heavens no! I wouldn't consider doing that. First of all I'm pretty sure that would be considered trespassing and theft.
I'm fortunate in that I have access to several really wonderful farmer's markets. I thought perhaps if I came across them at the market I would consider getting some and trying them.
It would appear that most folks are on the side of give 'em to the cows sooooooooo...... not sure it will appear on the family dinner menu anytime soon.

You don't give them to the cows.

You extract the sugar, THEN you give the resulting pulp to the cows.

They are not something you would ever find at a farmers market.

Re: What food item is in the field?

Okay EF gang this is my first spring here in Switzerland. A week or so ago I was out and about and saw via car and train field upon field full of these pretty yellow flowers. They don't look like the beginning of the sunflowers I saw when I arrived in summer. What are they? What crop is growing this time of year?

Raps, they press rapeseed oil out of it. I just love the bright color!

Re: What food item is in the field?

Also known as colza in French and Canola in the USA. The colour is OK, but the smell when you walk in the countryside is awful and makes your throat sore on a sunny day. Look even better is planted near a few fields of flax, with its lovely blue colour.

Re: What food item is in the field?

RAPESEED or more commonly called COLZA here. Used to make edible oil.

In North America it is called CANOLA (which is a CDN variation on rapeseed). It stands for "Canada oil low acid".
