Seafood / Fish market in Zurich? Also Fruit/Veg market?

Hi all,

I'm relocating to Zurich from London (originally from the US). I'm wondering where we can go to get fresh seafood, fish, etc in Zurich - does such a thing exist? Ideally something like Billingsgate Market in London but I know this is wishful thinking!

Also is there a fresh fruit/veg market somewhere in Zurich as well?

Thanks in advance

Plenty of options in Zürich and throughout Switzerland. Here is my list of markets which should help you get settled: http://laughinglemon.ch/food-wine-in...ket-locations/

Fresh is available at the same markets. In addition, this place offers a nice selection of fresh fish with a few stores around the area: Dörig (only in German)

Good luck and welcome...

Hi, there's a market at Buerkliplatz which sells fresh fish, vegetables and beautiful flowers. I think it's on every Tuesday and Thursday. It's also got a pretty good little cafe stall serving delicious cakes! Hope you enjoy your time in Zurich

The competition markets are at Helvetiaplatz and in Oerlikon, the one in Oerlikon being conveniently on Saturday-morning while the one at Helvetia is -- at least used to be .-- on Thursday morning. Mum loved the one at Helvetiaplatz but detested the one at Bürkliplatz due to the many Züriberg-Damen

Fresh fish here in Zürich comes from the big market in Paris and for Paris-Zürich needs one to two days. Add one day for coast-Paris and you have roughly THREE to FOUR days, and this means five or six days until the stuff is ready at the retailers. I like fresh fish on the Italian or French coastline, but overhere, if fish, I prefer FILLETS

Are the prices at the markets significantly lower than that at coop or manor or migros for example?

I have found the markets here to be more expensive than supermarkets, seems you have to pay the middleman rather than cut him out as happens in the rest of the world!!

In my experience and according to many professional reviews, the freshest fish and seafood is the stuff you buy frozen. It's been frozen quickly after the catch and remains so until you are about to eat it. Unfrozen however - who knows how long it's been deteriorating.
Some people confuse unfrozen with 'fresh' or think it's fresh because it's from the market, as if the stall holders have somehow found a local source of fresh seafood (apart from lake fish) fresh from the trawler.
And some of the stuff you buy 'fresh' in Mirgos for example from the fish counter, was just frozen, and then thawed for display.
Tip: if fish smells fishy it's old.
oh, and steer well clear of Pangasius...

One quick question, why is fillet better? Doesn't it come from the same whole fish that is next to it?

It's like baby food. Easier to eat and far less scary than something with bones in it.

It's a Swiss thing.

Thank god there are some Italians here.

Yeah, but isn't that strictly a wholesaler? Only businesses can shop there.

Exactly, high-quality frozen is often the best.

I have never understood the point of stores selling thawed-from-frozen seafood. Cuz that combines the worst qualities of fresh seafood (perishability) with those of frozen (texture changes from freezing, especially if done wrong). If it's gonna be frozen anyway, why not sell it to me frozen so I can thaw it at my convenience??

For what it's worth, the Indian shop Aggarwal receives air freight shipments of never-frozen fish and shrimp every Thursday evening (if I recall the day correctly). I need to try those shrimp...
