Reasonably priced Indian or Thai food in Basel

Hello All,

It's my birthday in a couple of weeks and we are planning a day in Basel, we are visiting the Cafe Des Arts in Barfüsserplatz, and a couple of other places, then we want to look for some authentic vegetarian Indian or Asian food, or possibly Thai.
Sadly the couple of places we've tried up to yet (just over the border in Germany) were disappointing, the food tasted somewhat bland to us as we're from England and the Indian food served up there is totally different! Here (naturally) they serve here to suit the Swiss/German palette, which seems to be not very spicy and more creamy than it should be, in my opinion.
We're not looking for anywhere posh, can be street food, takeaway or a cheap and cheerful sit down, what is important to us is the taste of the food!!
When we lived near Heidelberg we used to frequent a great Indian student cafe there, where you could buy really wonderful homemade Indian food, takeaway or sit in, for a very reasonable price, of course we're not expecting the price to be so reasonable in Basel but some tips on where to go to get good honest Indian/Asian food would be very welcome!!
Any ideas anyone??

Re: Reasonably priced Indian or Thai food in Basel

Hi!
Looking for a reasonably priced and tasty Thai/Indian food is a bit of challenge here in Basel. But at lunchtime you can get a super cheap deal at Aggarwal /takeaway close to Claraplatz. Vegetarian plate is sfr 10 with a drink, it is very simple, usually rice, dahl and veggies. Nothing special but ok. I would rather do takeaway from Lily's at Claraplatz and go and hangout by the river. There is a very good srilankan takeaway called Taste Me but it's bit out of the way and I'm never sure about the opening times http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserR..._Me-Basel.html Their food is much better than Aggarwal, seems quite authentic (never been to Sri Lanka) portions are huge and cheap. But a bit out of the way, so going with a group is a hassle... If you do Lily's takeaway, the food is around Sfr 20 for veggiemeals and quality is good.

There's a couple of places on Rosentalstrasse, Malai Thai and another, smaller one that's closer to the station. Malai Thai is Swiss-ified, the other place I haven't tried but my co-workers seem to like it more. In general ethnic food in Europe is crap, so if you find a good place please share.

Re: Reasonably priced Indian or Thai food in Basel

We've been to a couple decent Indian restaurants.

Mandir (Schützenmattstrasse 2, 4051 Basel) is our current favourite, always seems to deliver on flavour. Also, Biryani Haus (Amerbachstrasse 14, 4057 Basel) is a goer.

For Thai I would recommend popping into the Markthalle near the SBB, there's some decent food in there. You'll find all sorts of decent food in there from around the world actually.

We got a delivery from there on Saturday, and the food was good (if a bit tardy - but we did put in a big order). I'm slightly hopeful that they've bucked up a bit after their recent lapse.

+1 on Mandir. I was there last night for dinner with some clients. The food is always good.

The Thai take out next to Credit Suisse / Migros in Claraplatz is not bad ... cheap and nicely done. I prefer that to Lily's

I'll second this, but note that this is for lunch only. Veggie dishes 10-15 CHF, meaty ones more like 14-20, if I recall correctly. Big cupola hall and hipsterish rugged tables and benches to enjoy the (moderate) crowd.

Go to Markthalle close to train station for lunch..Lots of choice although it is quite full but for 14-18 francs you find good 'street food'.
