Has anyone seen fresh physalis?

Last week in Germany at Aldi I found fresh physalis for a good price. Btw. Aldi Germany has dried ones all the time.

However, couldn't find any around here - who has seen them? And please don't point me to one of these overpriced ethnic stores in Zurich, as I won't be able to go there anyway. Thanks.

Re: Has anyone seen fresh physalis?

Any bigger Migros in my region usually has them in the exotic fruits section, usually all year long.

Our local Lidl has them. Appears to be from the same supplier as Coop but a third the price.

We grew them in the garden last year and they were pretty successful.

Ok so I'll try to get to Lidl, it is a bit out of the way for me but still ok. And will look in Migros in Schwyz.

Re: Has anyone seen fresh physalis?

*gesundheit*

i had to look that one up.

Had you said Chinese gooseberry I would have known what you meant - but everything is called something strange in this northern land.

I saw them on sale here the other day http://www.zulaufquelle.ch/ ?

But also every so often in Migro - in the same section that you find avocados, mangoes and passion fruit. I guess they are deemed exotic?

EDIT- spot the slooow typer..

Re: Has anyone seen fresh physalis?

I have seen them in Coop.

Last year when my sister was visiting us, we were in Coop and she said (quite loudly) oh look, they have syphilis!

Re: Has anyone seen fresh physalis?

Tom where did you get the plants? Because from what I found online the ones growing wild in Switzerland seem to be different. And the garten center page says edible but not very special and no fine taste.

This is probably written by someone who thinks bread and cheese should be a national dish!

They had a few different sorts. But do you really want to come all the way to Kanton Aaaaargau?

Are they the things they keep putting on puddings that you discard before digging in?

My father-in-law gave them to us as very young plants and we planted them out.

I'll ask next time we see him.

Not really. Just thought the information was interesting.

Haeberli has physalis plants (Andenbeere):

http://haeberli-beeren.ch/de/produkt...amt/andenbeere

Sadly, here in perpetually rain-soaked chilly Ausserschwyz my attempt at growing physalis failed... but you might have better luck in sunny Zug.

(As for fresh-to-eat, if you ever find yourself in Pfäffikon SZ, Bettio at the Seedamm center usually has physalis. )

My dyslexic friend got syphilis in from a lidl ladi ..... but that's probably not what you meant.

Just to inform you - didn't find any at the coop, but the big migros had them, and, as some of you pointed out quite correctly, in the exotic fruits section.

Re: Has anyone seen fresh physalis?

Lots and lots grow in gardens around here- and the orange bells which contain the seed, or physalis in this case, are often used in autumn decoration. But if you want fresh local ones, you will have to wait for october I'm afraid.
