Jewish rye bread/soudough bread with caraway?

Hi,

Does anyone know if anywhere in Switz sell Jewish-style rye bread/sourdough with caraway seed, preferably in the BZ or ZH area?

It used to be available in the UK at Sainsbury's many moons ago (maybe it still is?), but I've never seen it here.

Many thanks for any pointers you can offer!

Have you thought about trying to bake it yourself? If you have what the Americans call a "Dutch Oven" / the French a "cocotte", it is actually reasonably easy to make bread.

I know what you mean, ´cause it used to be a supermarket staple in NYC when I lived there. Unfortunately, I haven´t seen it in my over 10 years here. I´ve seen rye bread , and I´ve seen caraway double baked sticks or rings, sometimes sweet, sometimes salty, but never the two ingredients together.

Ah,
Hofpfisterei in Munich sells these (and many other variants, each with a distinct taste).
About the only thing I really miss from Germany ;-)
There's just nothing comparable here.
Sadly.

In Zurich, you could of course ask in one of the kosher shops around Wiedikon.

Baking your own might be your best option, indeed.

@Simon: yes, thw US-sytle would work well. I used to buy lots of Levy brand when i was living in the US.

@Rainer: Yes, the Hofpfisterei is amazing. I used to live above one on Munich. Good times.

Re: Jewish rye bread/soudough bread with caraway?

So, for anyone reading this, I've discovered a couple of things:

1) Hofpfisterei does mail order :-)

2) There's a kosher bakery at Schimmelstrasse 1 in ZH that sells caraway bread. I've not tried it yet though - I made the elementary mistake of showing up late lunchtime on Friday and expecting there to be any bread left ;-) I'll try again next week, and not on Friday!

Thanks. Do let us know how it stacks up against Hofpfisterei (whose bread is, BTW, also certified as kosher and halal).
It's very close to my office.

Have you asked Hofpisterei about how much they charge for sending the bread to Switzerland?
i used to mail-order and have it sent to my parents home in Germany, close to the Swiss border - but that was while i was living in Thurgau and it was only 40-ish km (one way). I would collect half of it (using the tiny freezer in my flat) and put the rest into my parents' freezer...
They charged about 5€ for a 20kg order, which was amazing value.

If it's not too expensive, maybe we could organize a group-order (with other interested rye-bread-afficionados).
20kg is also the customs-limit per person - but I guess it does not apply to mail-order bread.

Re: Jewish rye bread/soudough bread with caraway?

So, I went there.
Bread with caraway. Not sure if it was actually rye. Way too soft. McDonalds-bun soft. But 1kg for 4.20 CHF. Obviously geared towards large families ;-)
The sweet treats looked interesting, though.
Might return for those.

They have a FB-page (but no real homepage): https://www.facebook.com/waehebeck

Have asked Hofpfisterei for their terms for sending to Zurich.
Yes, I'm that desperate.
