Re: Cheddar cheese

Coop sells Cathedral City in dark red packaging. If you're used to American cheddar it might look a bit pale (which may be why you overlooked it), but the taste is adequate for most purposes.

Otherwise, try El Maiz behind the main station in Zurich. It's a Mexican shop, so they might have some suitable Mexican cheese: http://elmaiz.ch/de/

Grumpy's Godminster cheddar is the best, nothing comes close . You can get them at Viadukt or in Jelmoli (in Zurich)

Can confirm - most Coops and Migros sell it here in zurich, usually packed with all the other cheeses. Otherwise ask at the cheese counter (if there's one)

From Ciudad de Catedral in the little known northern Mexican province of Xedár de San Juan.

Re: Cheddar cheese

2 points:
1) Its no longer Grumpy's cheese stall
2) Surely if the cheese required is for mexican food then going to the mexican shop for mexican cheese would be a good idea? Its not like they've never been mentioned on here before - or have a webpage - in English - http://elmaiz.ch/en/

Re: Cheddar cheese

As a possibly more tasty (but priceworthy if compared to more upmarket groceries, ie Jelmoli, Globus etc) alternative to the Cathedral option, you might try Lidl's extra mature version (purple/ivory packaging). It is quite decent for the price and has detectable salty "crunch".

Re: Cheddar cheese

There is cheddar cheese available from a huge block at the cheese counter at the Migros in Thalwil center. Like real, orange cheddar cheese. We are Americans who cook lots of Mexican dinners, and it works for us. Perhaps you could ask at the cheese counters of a couple Zurich Migros? Good luck!

Real Cheddar cheese is not, and never has been, orange.

Good cheeses, agreed, but to add cheesiness to Mexican food? It would be like ordering a fine old malt whisky, then topping up the glass with Coke!

Use something much cheaper. Cathedral City is absolutely fine for this sort of thing. In fact, when you have no easy access to a wider range of British cheese, Cathedral City is a perfectly reasonable everyday Cheddar.

Among common Swiss varieties, Appenzeller has a nice, positive flavour so that could do the job quite nicely too.

The only Lidl (in CH) I've been to is the one in Wetzikon - I'm not a regular shopper there as I prefer ANY store I can walk to, but I did buy some at the beginning of the summer. It is with the rest of the cheese

Re: Cheddar cheese

All of the above suggestions work.

And also the Zurich Mexican store (at a price):

I don't think anyone has mentioned the Mexican shop in Zurich yet, so here's a link to it: http://elmaiz.ch/en
