Non Alcoholic Beer - poor selection

Having decided to cut down on the old booze, I've noticed yet another thing thats annoyingly scarce in Switzerland: Non-alcoholic beer.

Where I'm from all the big brands have non-alcohol and low alcohol (2.0-3.5%) versions in the stores, here it seems only feldschlösschen and Eichof offer non alcoholic versions of themselves.

The Feld is ok, the Eichof is undrinkable.

Any tips on where to find decent alkoholfrei lager here?

Just had a couple of those, for the first time, coincidentally, this pm - and was pleasantly surprised.

Re: Non Alcoholic Beer - poor selection

Because of an allergy to histamines which are soluble in alcohol, I had to switch to non alcoholic beer. From disliking it at first, I now actually prefer it to the real thing.

I've tried as many brands as I could lay my hands on, most obtained from visits accross the border. Preferences are highly personal and after 10 years, there are some brands that I would prefer not to have.

My favourites which are available in CH are:

Clausthaller - available from Denner. Extra Herb is even better but you only find it in specialist drink merchants like Paul Ullrech.

Karlskrone - available from Aldi. Coming from an Ausrian brewery it is cheap and good.

Erdinger Weissbräu - available from Migros. A wheat beer which is absolutely delicious on a hot summer day.

I can buy Chlausthaler in Coop (Rheinfelden).

The Erdinger Weiss is indeed at Migros and you are correct, it is one of the better ones. There is a hotel in Rheinfelden that serves an non-alcoholic Weizen that I'd put up against any 'real' beer.

Note to self: Find out the name.

Thanks for that! I had a look at my local Denner and Aldi and couldn't find any non alcoholic options but i guess i just didn't look closely enough, will definitely check these out!

Re: Non Alcoholic Beer - poor selection

I thought it would be easy to just have a look at the beer selection at leshop.ch (Migros' online store). But unexpectetly and surprisingly they have a rather large selection of normal beer.

Fro all those listed so far they also have "Tourtel Pur Malt • Helles Bier • alkoholfrei"

https://www.leshop.ch/leshop/Main.do...39_Alkoholfrei

PS: I think most larger Swiss breweries have a non-alcoholic version, mostly just that they can do advertisement in the TV.

Re: Non Alcoholic Beer - poor selection

I usually drink Landi alcohol free bier, Farmer brand, in a grey and white can.

Living in Canton Fribourg, where we do not buy Feldschlössen beer, I confess to accidentally buying some alcohol free beer recently, and it was very nice.

Cheers, popped over to Aldi over lunch and found them. Looking forward to trying them - certainly can't argue with the 0.49 CHF price tag!

Re: Non Alcoholic Beer - poor selection

You can also make you own Panachè. In one of the tennis clubs I played the other day, the guy used Sprite and local beer mixed 50/50. If you experiment with changing the proportion, you may well end up with low calories and alcohol content home made Panachè. It might be worth trying

I agree. It is the only one that actually tastes like beer.
Haven't seen it in Switzerland though but a good reason for a shopping trip to Germany. We bought it in the e-kauf in Waldshut.

Re: Non Alcoholic Beer - poor selection

This was a ranking of german non-alcoholic beers carried out by menshealth.de. I've tried quite a few of them. The highest ranking one that I could find was the Krombacher but to my taste, it was not better than the Clausthaller or the Karlskrone.

1. Lübzer
2. Krombacher
3. Holsten
4. König Pilsener
5. Bitburger
6. Löwenbräu
7. Härke Fresh It
8. Warsteiner
9. Glossnerbräu
10. Jever Fun
11. Clausthaller classic
12. Veltins
13. Beck's
14. Flensburger
15. Oettinger
16. Schmucker
17. Wernesgrüner

Low on my list comes Coop bio, Eichhof and Landi. Feldschlossen is OK if you can't get anything else.
