Where can I buy Golden Syrup and Black treacle in Basel

Hello all you good people out there, or 'ow do (as they tend to say in Yorkshire!)

As you can guess from that, I am originally from Yorkshire in England, and I want to make a traditional Yorkshire ginger cake called Parkin, my mother always used to make it in the festive season!

Amonst other things I need Golden Syrup, Black Treacle and Molasses sugar, and these things are not that easy to find here, should have picked some up when I was back in England last, but hey ho, I didn't!

If anyone can help me with idea's where I can find these items in Basel or nearby it would be much appreciated!

Put this in the search and you'll see this has been done to death. I see you're based in Germany, I was able to buy Golden Syrup from an E-Center there about a month ago so it's probably worth taking a look.

What sort of Parkin did she make that required all three of those ingredients? I'm from Yorkshire too and make it quite often but have never used golden syrup, black treacle AND molasses all at the same time.

I'm not in Basel but I think there is a bookstore somewhere that sells British stuff, the Baselites will be along shortly to help you with more details I'm sure.

Bider and Tanner at Bankverein. Not sure I've seen black treacle or molasses there though.

Re: Where can I buy Golden Syrup and Black treacle in Basel

Aye up.
I made Parkin recently with a recipe asking for black treacle and golden syrup. I got the Golden Syrup from Manor or Globus. I also have seen it in both I think and in some French supermarkets (Casino, Leclerc)
Treacle was harder. I got Molasses instead, this was from a kind of health food droguerie called Drogerie zum Chrüterhüsli in Basel. Had the same look and smell to Tate and Lyle black treacle. But was not as thick.

This was the one I bought I think. http://www.naturkost.com/rapunzel-zu...r-melasse-300g

Yes you're quite right, I didn't make myself entirely clear on that, I need golden syrup and black treacle for the Parkin but I need Molasses sugar for some spiced chutney that I'm making so I thought I'd throw that in the post too, apologies if it was somewhat confusing!

Molasses? That's not a Yorkshire thing, surely? Mind you, I'm from Barnsley, so what do I know?

Nope. And due to lack of self control, I ate it all up even before it got to that nice soft almost chewy stage.

How could you. At least I saved some of mine until it got to that stage, then I ate it.

Re: Where can I buy Golden Syrup and Black treacle in Basel

Anyone driving from Neuchâtel to Pontarlier can buy big jars of Mélasse at the petrol station just before the border, on the left. Darker than Golden syrup, lighter than treacle- so about the same as a mix of the two.

Re: Where can I buy Golden Syrup and Black treacle in Basel

I still have some in my cupboard and would Love to make a nice ginger cake or Parkin. My grandmother was from them northern parts and made a stunning cake for whenever we went to visit but alas I didn't ask for the recipe, or for the treacle tart that has never been beaten. Grannies recipe please.

Re: Where can I buy Golden Syrup and Black treacle in Basel

My mum's treacle tart was to die for. She made it with oats rather than breadcrumbs and we all loved it.

For the filling 2oz sugar, 2oz golden syrup, 2oz margarine, 2oz porridge oats.
Melt margarine ( or butter) in a pan with the syrup and sugar then add the oats.
Spread the filling into your pastry case ( either homemade or bought) and bake at around 170/180° until golden brown. Serve warm with custard.

Re: Where can I buy Golden Syrup and Black treacle in Basel

This thread is straight out of Eastenders .....

- golden syrup = blond wig;

- black treacle = term of endearment for someone of afro-caribbean origin.

- "Cor, that's a nice golden syrup, me ol' black treacle".

And the Parkin recipe. For treacle content I usually do 3/4 golden syrup 1/4 black treacle but you can adjust that depending on your preferences.

6oz wholemeal flour, 6oz oatmeal, 1 teasp. cream of tartar, 1/2 teasp. bicarb of soda, 1 teasp ground ginger, 1/2 teasp. ground cinnamon, a little grated nutmeg, 4oz margerine or lard, 3oz brown sugar, 3 tablespoons black treacle, 3 tsblespoons golden syrup, 1 egg, 3/4 gill milk to mix.

Mix flour, oatmeal, bicarb, c. of tartar and spices together in a bowl, rub in fat or marg till mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs.
Warm the syrup, treacle and sugar together but don't allow it to become hot. Make a well in the centre of the flour mixture, stir in the melted syrup mixture followed by the beaten egg and milk. Mix well together and pour the mixture into a greased cake or yorkshire pudding tin
Bake in a moderate oven 375 F Gas mk 4 for about 50 to 60 mins untill the parkin is firm to touch.

This is from my mothers schoolgirl cookbook that she made called "Ye Olde Wilkinson Cook Book" which I treasure after all these years! It was a recipe passed down by my Grandmother! It's the original recipe, so in imperial, but I'm sure you can find the metric conversions on the net, but for the 3/4 gill I use about 100ml.
The only thing I do differently is I replace one of the tablespoons of golden syrup with stem ginger syrup! Happy parkin cooking!

Absolutely. If you leave out the treacle, flour, sugar and oatmeal it's completely sugar and carb free.
It's an occasional indulgence that reminds me of home.
