He's addicted to the caffeine. And a nasty habit.

Does he have other underlying health problems (overweight, drug or alcohol problems)... ?

I know someone who had a very bad coke 'diet' habit, was completely addicted to the caffeine, but she also had a kidney problem. She is now on dialysis. Three days per week in hospital getting treatment, every week, for over 5 years, waiting for a kidney transplant.

A dialysis/kidney diet is extreme... she cannot even drink water like a 'normal' person...

Coke 'light' has a significant amount of sodium in it. Check the bottle. The total allowance per day, from all sources is a maximum of 2300mg per day, which is the amount of one teaspoon of pure salt.

Does he also add salt to his food ? Eat a lot of salted foods ?

The effect of over-dosing on salt, in the longer term, is affects on blood pressure, fluid retention, liver function, kidney function, heart attack, stroke. A high sodium diet also effects calcium as your body over-secretes it so needs to use your bones to access calcium, so the risk of osteoporosis is higher.

Although diabetics (Type 2) often consume 'diet' drinks, the sodium content means that they need to be careful... substituting normal 'sugary' drinks for the 'diet' version may be not that much healthier...

How much diet drink is this person actually consuming per day... it would be interesting to calculate the whole caffeine intake (from all sources) as well as the sort of sodium content...

Plus, unhealthy choices usually replace healthy choices...the whole diet may be lacking, the excessive consumption of caffeine and salt may be masking a bigger 'healthy eating' decision-making process...

The only people I know who are addicted to 'diet' drinks are extremely overweight caffeine addicts...
He is quite healthy at this moment, tough a diabetic family history. And I don't think he is addicted to caffeine neither, as I could easily replace the drink with orange juice (which also contains sugar).

As you said, it is a habit more or less and he just don't like to drink water or anything that is flavorless.

My favourite joke about Coke Zero is that they took away the last natural ingredient the moment they removed the sugar.
Sad isn't it?

Re: Help needed: Coke/Pepsi Zero Replacement

my hubby and i discovered an apple sweetener at a health store and you can add sparkling water like Perrier or Pellegrino as they are more natural so its a healthy alternative plus delicious replacement here is a link to their website http://www.beutelsbacher.de/sortiment.aspx?ID=663

Amazing! I'd be VERY careful with this product, as it says it contains PURE HYDROGEN. Clearly this is a major health risk, as anyone smoking nearby may cause an explosion. Even more dangerous than Diet Coke!!!

How many people drink alkaline ionized water with grate results...

It is all about our cells' environment. Is it alkaline (peaceful, loving, happy, calm) or is it acidic (stressful, irritated, agitated). Alkalinity produces positive health effects like vitality and acidity produces ill effects thus loss of vitality and disease. It's an easy fix... it's up to you though... Thoughts + Action = Results!

0.1g or 2% of the RDA in a 0.5l bottle which is not a significant amount. I just checked.
So I could drink 25l of Diet Coke a day without any issue

Re: Help needed: Coke/Pepsi Zero Replacement

To the OP:

Why doesn't he just drink tap water?

He's a grown-up and not some spoilt little kid (although he may have been and that may be the root-cause of the problem).

Parents - you're setting your kids up for this if you have anything on the table for them at meal times in place of plain water.

Coke etc should be seen as a treat and not a staple. (unlike wine)

I just drank half a bottle of Fairy Liquid and I don't feel any better though every time I talk, I start frothing bubbles at the mouth so people now think I have rabies.

Thanks for nothing.

Yes indeed, nothing calms the agitated soul like a glass of Clorox every night, for added vitality. Stressed Thoughts + Action of Drinking Bleach = Definite Results

Re: Help needed: Coke/Pepsi Zero Replacement

Dont have advice but I feel you, as I too have been unsuccesful in stopping oh's daily cola drinking habit. The phosphoric acid has caused intestinal issues but it is supposedly not a reason for him to drink less. I suspect it is an addiction and it also has to do with cherishing past memories (consuming coca cola with friends in his childhood and youth). It is also the only thing that wakes him up in te morning and keeps him alert. You cant force an adult to do anything unless s/he wants to. Wishing you well.

Someone will probably shoot me- but how about Rivella Blau/bleu.
I love the refreshing and unusual taste, and no sugar.

Re: Help needed: Coke/Pepsi Zero Replacement

Doesnt it have artificial sweeteners though? Not that high fructose corn syrup in coke waa any healthier (in high quantities) Wouldnt work for oh anyway bc it has no caffeine.
