Can you get BBQ Pork/Roast duck in Zürich?

Hey everyone!

I was wondering if you mean find BBQ pork, roast duck, or other Chinese dishes in Zürich. In Canada you can usually go to a restaurant or butcher and have them prepare you a box of BBQ pork for takeout or whatever, and I was wondering if you can find that here as well.

Cheers

Cooked barbeque pork? I know in some Chinese/Asian supermarkets they sell roast pork and other cooked meats that you can reheat for certain Asian dishes. But don't expect to high a quality. Its often better to do it yourself here, with a good recipe and a bit of time you can get good results.

I assume you mean char siu (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Char_siu)

Availability in Zurich AFAIK: zero.

It's btw something specifically Cantonese, so few of the Asian stores here will have anything remotely similar as they are typically mostly Thai or Vietnamese (or other flavours of South East Asian.)

Re: Can you get BBQ Pork/Roast duck in Zürich?

Whole frozen precooked duck, deboned, from the Asian store - "New Asia Market" in Zurich...

It's not very expensive either...maybe 12chf for a whole duck. It's pre-seasoned so what I do is defrost it in the refrigerator for a day then cook it in a very pan or wok...

I haven't seen char siu pork around...

Yup char siu! I guess I was a bit spoiled with such a big Cantonese community in Canada

Interesting, I'll have to check it out. Might be a decent substitute!

Try Chopsticks restaurant in Niederdorf. The chef is from Hong Kong and the BBQ pork there is good (although it depends - some day's it's great and some days it's not so spectacular). The BBQ pork is usually served with rice or noodles, but I'm sure you can ask them if you can buy a takeaway box.

Otherwise, make it yourself. I'm going to make some BBQ pork this week because I've been craving it too. It will be my first ever attempt. Maybe we can swap notes

Re: Can you get BBQ Pork/Roast duck in Zürich?

Sure you can find roast pork or duck. Spanferkel is pretty much the same as spanish Lechon, and I have seen roast duck in stores and restaurants.

But if you are looking for a particular style of Chinese cooking, they are out there, but you have to find them. I recall a restaurant in Zuerich that takes Peking Duck reservations. Sorry, it was ages ago, and I don't remember which.

Typically, I forego looking for such things here. Most of the time, it doesn't really satisfy when I find them. I just binge eat when I travel to Asia or the US.

I would make it myself. It's not so hard. Just make a big batch and freeze slices which you can then pull out and throw into stir fries or whatever...

Re: Can you get BBQ Pork/Roast duck in Zürich?

You can find it in most Chinese/Asia restaurant.
My favorite is Beyond(right behind the Zurich HB), China Zen(Adliswil- but if you take S4, get off at Sood-oberleimbath), Ah-hua(the Thail restaurant in Helvitiaplatz). You can also get them from New Asia Market, Lianhua(if you order in advance).
Good luck~ and enjoy!

Re: Can you get BBQ Pork/Roast duck in Zürich?

Hey man, here's a tip for free: you can make char sui pork really easily at home and it's pretty cheap.

Step 1. Go to Coop
Step 2. Buy the pork loin or two
Step 3. Go to asian food store off Langstrasse or in HB
Step 4. Buy char sui pork seasoning or Lee Kum Kee char sui marinade
Step 4. Go home and marinade the bastard (add a bit of 5 spice for flavour)
Step 5. Cook in oven with the grill setting
Step 6. Eat, actually tastes better the next day.

Your welcome
