Son has Egg allergy - what bread Brandís ?

Hi

Went to migros Zug Metalli today, which has their organic store as well. Couldn't find a single brand of sliced or fresh white bread without eggs !! Anyone has the same issue? What Brandís should I look for ?

Thanks
R

Eiweiss is the German word for protein. Are you sure that's not what you were reading on the packets?

Zopf (well my ZŲpfe!) have egg in but I don't think other 'ordinary' bread ever does.

I just looked at a few randomly chosen breads on the Migros website. None contained egg, but all contained protein!

Ask at the counter of your local Reformhaus (health food store). They'll be able to reassure you.

Thanks. I read eier, ouef, and oueva. All 3 languages said egg. Even asked the store staff and they couldn't find any WHITE bread brand without egg.

Re: Son has Egg allergy - what bread Brandís ?

Rahulm,

You can read the list of ingredients of several types of bread on the Migros website:

Bio:
https://produkte.migros.ch/sortiment...l%7Emigros-bio

Larger selection including non-bio:
https://produkte.migros.ch/sortiment...e-backen/brote

You'll notice that the Zopf breads (the ones that look braided - this is a soft white bread) do indeed contain egg 'Vollei'. But most other breads do not.

That said, I do not know if this could falls under 'may contrain traces of...'

ETA:

Are you looking for a white bread that is not 'crusty'? Many of the softer breads - not just Zopf -do contain egg. Looking at the LeShop website (Leshop is Migros), you can rule out those that contain egg - but you'll see there are a couple of 'soft-ish' white breads that do not. The 'crustier' breads will usually not contain any egg. More types and ingredients here:

https://www.leshop.ch/leshop/Main.do...OP_SUPERMARKET

---

You might PM EF member Odile. She has posted before about a grandchild who is allergic to eggs, she might be able to point you in the right direction for egg-less products here.

Presumably she's looking for fluffy US-style bread, which is hard to make without eggs.

But yes, best bet is to make your own. Buy a breadmaker, then it's even easier!

Having a grandson who is severely allergic to eggs, even traces- I personally don't make jokes about it. Seeing a young child in hospital, so swollen that he has to be intubated- is not really funny.

Most bread is made wihout egg, but most bread is made in a laboratory/factory where lots of other products are made containing egg-like Zopf/tresse, cakes and tarts, etc- which can contaminate surfaces and machines and operators.

Also it's easy for find pasta made without egg- but it's been made int he same machine- which even if cleaned, can still have traces. Usually with pasta, good brands will tell you exactly which batch was made after egg pasta- to be avoided, and which batch they garantee egg free. In my granson's case, even a tiny trace can result in immediate ambulance and adrenalin- and if not given early enough intubation.

Tragically, so many people these days claim pseudo allergies of every kind- and many people now dismiss allergies as beign fads or 'in the mind' - which can have tragic consequences for those with life threatening allergies- so I have every sympathy with the OP. DB, Eiweiss nearly gave my daughter and sil a heart attack when they read it on the package of the biscuits I had just given grandson. A very unfortunate term indeed.

Migros does have a dedicated 'allergy info line' for all their products so you can make sure. I am not sure however if the service is available in English or not.

Indeed, as most mass-produced pasta is made without egg.

thats what we do.

egg can be hidden everywhere in products. Fortunately all ingredients and allergen need to be on the label.
