Some of the Geneva reds are fine, but you aren't going to find them anywhere except on the vineyard doorstep or in the owner's mate's restaurant (e.g. Le Curling at La Jonction). In fact, some are sold out before harvest. No doubt partly for sentimental or patriotic reasons.
Many or most Swiss wine producers are small operations & only produce in small quantities So it is pointless to recommend them since they are probably not available where you live; because they are sold out or not distributed in your area.
Best to keep trying different ones that you can find locally until you hit on one or two that you like.
My little village (circa 3,500 people) has 4 vineyards; 2 are OK & 1 is good (often wins medals & so) but the good one sold out before the end of November.

Re: french wine vs swiss wine

Ticino has fantastic red wines. My personal favourites:

Ligornetto Merlot Ticino DOC and

Selezione d'Ottobre Merlot

del Ticino DOC Matasci

check out http://www.landolt-weine.ch/de/weinshop/weinsuche.php
wher you can search by Swiss regions.

For Swiss white wines, most Aigle wines are good, but the Aigle les Morales (coop sells this) is the best. You can find this in most restuarants too. Epesses is also great with fondue.

I can't stand wines from Waat. I recommend a visit to the Wine boats in November where you can try all you like for CHF 14. Something like this would never work where I come from, it would just turn into a huge p*ss up

If you buy something from one of the wineries they'll often send you a free ticket for the next festival.

I've heard of Twann. An old Swiss guy I was chatting with when I was riding the boat on the three-lake tour told me that the wine there was very good, as was a restaurant that you could take the funicular to. It's quite well known, though not among us expats.

Re: french wine vs swiss wine

Hi,

I have to say I find this subject a little strange.

There is such a huge variety of French and Swiss wines that it's like trying to compare pebbles from two different beaches.

I have had good, bad and indifferent French wines, ditto Swiss wines.

Personally I prefer New World wines - i.e. Aussie, NZ, Sarth Ifricah.

And nobody has mentioned English wines yet.

Cheers,
Nick

Re: french wine vs swiss wine

Dears,

I have found very nice Swiss wines from the Valais region (it is specific region with different micro-climates and complex soil structure) - Johannisberg, Pinot Noir, Syrah.
And around Geneva I found an amazing Chasselas`wine.
BTW, the best local Swiss wines you cannot buy from supermarkets.

B.

Re: french wine vs swiss wine

If you cannot make up your mind "French vs Swiss Wine"..consider Italian wine !

I discovered a nice Wine Shop in Zurich - Renascimentho. (Mühlegasse 29, tramstop Rudolf Brun Brücke) The owner is a friendly half-Italian/half-Swiss guy with lots of great wines and grappas in his cellar. He is specialised in wines from Tuscany I believe. He tells enthusiastically about the wines, were they come from etc etc. He always has at least a few for half-price.

(PS - no I'm not in any way associated with this shop - just a satsified customer)

Re: french wine vs swiss wine

It's summer and I find it too hot for the big reds so my favourite wine at the moment is actually Swiss. Everybody should try a chilled Oeil de Perdrix from the Neuchatel region. It's a great party wine and is relatively cheap.

I have plenty of time for big reds from Bordeaux and Australia. My favourite whites are from New Zealand but for a nice summer compromise try an Oeil de Perdrix
