Hi sherryvisione,

Have you tried Fenwick's Feinkost in Missionstrasse?

They tout themselves as selling "English" foods. Never been there myself so don't know them but have heard they stock cheeses.

They also have Branstons Pickle and fabulous English bacon, smoked or unsmoked

Grumpygrapefruit sells it
Thanks Sutter but not quite true, we do use it in our Ploughmans Lunches but only sell Hawkshead Chutney's at the moment. Britshop however do sell it.

Where to find cheddar cheese in Basel or over the border?

Hi all

I live in St Louis and I've been looking for cheddar cheese for a while - would love some for macaroni cheese and some old recipes. They used to have it in a local supermarket, but when the shop got rebranded, they stopped stocking it. I have searched here, and I know you can find it in Britshop (sorry, too expensive for what I need it for!). People have mentioned Migros, but where? I've looked in a few but am yet to find it.

If anyone has seen some recently, would appreciate it if you can tell me where!

Not a myth - Cheddar can be found in about 15 shops in the area.

The Basel Cheddar cheese hunt "thread" can be found :

http://www.englishforum.ch/food-drin...ar-cheese.html

The info is only 8 months or so old, but mostly still relevant.

Hope that helps

Pat

Re: Where to find cheddar cheese in Basel or over the border?

Not Basel, but assuming you have a Globus or Jelmoli to check out, it's available in Zürich Globus and Jelmoli all the time. It's about CHF4 per 100g though, so maybe that counts as too expensive for use in everyday cooking.

Re: Where to find cheddar cheese in Basel or over the border?

Thanks everyone, some great suggestions. Again, if anyone knows for sure somewhere that has it, that would be great. The problem; my two older kids go to school in france, mornings and afternoons, and I'm busy with my toddler or housework mornings and afternoon naps (for her, not me!) so I was hoping someone could be sure if a particular place. I will try some of the ones suggested. Thanks!

Re: Where to find cheddar cheese in Basel or over the border?

Hi Lorraine,
We get it in the Migros (part of Zugerland) in Steinhausen (canton Zug) but I note it is also sold on their online service (LeShop.ch) - see link: http://www.leshop.ch/leshop/Main.do?...ar_mature_200g

I am sure you would get it at most large Migros stores - but you may need to go back a few times - we find that they do not always have this cheese in stock (It is called "Cathedral City Cheddar" and it is pretty good - our kids love it).
Cheers, good lucj with your searches.

Re: Where to find cheddar cheese in Basel or over the border?

Most Migros sell it already pre-packaged (where all the cheese is on the shelf) and most Co-op's sell Chedder at the cheese counter (so I suppose the Co-op has to be big enough). I go to the Co-op in Gundeli (on Gunterstrasse near the main Bahnhof), and they have it behind the cheese counter.

Re: Where to find cheddar cheese in Basel or over the border?

We buy Cathedral Cheddar every week at the Migros on Claraplatz. It is located in the hard cheeses shelf. You have to search a bit as they tend to move it around.

Also, Manor on Greifengasse often has Cheddar in the cheeses section.

Though if you are going to grate it into macaroni cheese, any Swiss hard cheese will do the trick - e.g. Gruyere Surchoix.

HTH.

Migros at Bankverein. ( Aeschenvorstadt ). Also Manor at St Jakob Stadium. They had some whole Blue Stilton last time I was there. Yum.
