Bagels in Coop, Bern

So I was pretty excited about the arrival of sesame Bagels in Coop in June... Sad I know!

But I was sceptical... I wondered whether there arrival coincided with the Football celebrations but people around me kept reassuring me they were here to stay...

However.... I noticed that the 'best before' dates of these bagels was always the same (I'm fanatical about this because Coop's 'Best before' reputation is bad).... even sadder... I'm sorry

Anyway... I asked last week where the bagels were and to my surprise.... or not so surprise, the shop assistant told me they were only stocked during the Euro 2008 cup

My question is... 'Why would people only eat Bagels whilst watching Football?' and does anyone know where else I can buy bagels?

Re: Bagels in Coop, ****dorf

Yeah, my husband and I noticed the same - we were all excited that we can now have bagles as much and often as we can, only to not be able to find them anymore last week when we did our shopping. However, we didn't bother asking anyone, we got used to the fact that coop stocks stuff for a few weeks and then it becomes unavailable again (I want my bran flakes back!).

The other place you can find pretty similar bagles is Jelmoli, they just cost more there.

Re: Bagels in Coop, Bern

Hmm, Hiestand is COOP's in-house bakery, did find bagels there, no mention of a time restriction due to Euro 2008.

Maybe contact Hiestand to ask where they deliver bagels in the Bern area?

Jowa is Migros' in-house bakery, their website is not really helpful.

On the risk of being groaned, why do people choose to live in the sticks, like Bern At least, in ZH, there's American Bakery in Shopville or mybagel.ch for a quick bagel fix. Need culture and a bagel? Books 'n Bagels

You can order bagels from Mybagel for delivery outside of Zurich, but have to contact them on 044 310 20 80. Also looks like they only do the finished sandwich bagels, but you can always ask if they're willing to send out a bag of "nur de Bagel, ohni öps druff"

Next point of attack: ask around in Bern's panini shops where they get their bagels from. Great way to find yum places too!

- Adriano's mentions his focaccie come from the Ängeli-Beck, the pdf-file under Angebot mentions 6 different types of bagels

- Starbucks, maybe?

Quote:
Have fun bagel hunting!

Re: Bagels in Coop, Bern

I think (or assume) the bagles OP is referring to are those in a plastic wrapper, which keep for a couple of weeks and you can toast them/finish baking them in the oven.

Oops, website was down for a few minutes

Anyway, lastly, bagels being an East European Jewish invention, why not ask around the Jüdische Gemeinde Bern?

Or the American Women's Club, Bern?

Last resort, help thyself so helpeth thee God.

Yup, my assumption too, that's why I distinguished between the sandwich bagels sold at different panini bars/coffee shops and the "raw" item coming straight from the bakery/baked goods dept.

But, maybe some Bern-based EF'ers have better tips, they should be up and about by now

Since I'm from Zurich, I'll certainly be taking your tips on board - I didn't even know there was an American Bakery in Shopville! Cheers for that

Right behind the escalators coming down from where the post office used to be to go under where tram 3/10/14 stop, i.e. behind Espressino Due.
Unfortunately it's not really a bakery but a sandwich bar.

EDIT: sometimes I'm a bit dense in directions: Escalators near Gleis 3, go down, hit a left or right U-turn, go down 10m, U-turn again: voilà.

It's the bahnhof, not your sense of direction. Sometimes I think it changes its configuration (and I won't say how long it was until I found the place, even though someone had told me about it).

Mentioned on another thread for some other reason, Peace Foods in Baar has bagels. Haven't actually tried it.

Once it cools down a bit, I think I'm going to try to make my own. The ones from Jelmoli (I bought the same brand from the American store in Geneva) are better than the ones from Coop, but they both leave something to be desired. Too much time between baking and eating. And if I actually had a choice, I prefer cinnamon and raisin or a garbage bagel (aka everything bagel - sesame seeds, poppy seeds, garlic, onion, etc.).

The nearest Coop still has the bagels - they'll probably be gone soon. I don't think there's enough bagel eaters here to make a difference. Maybe the one in Luzern (Löwencenter) will continue to have them as they also carry Oreos, Pepperidge Farm cookies and Snyder's Pretzels.

Yeah, it's quite disorienting. My mother, who's been down there at least 30 times with me, still hits odd angles trying to find her way to the exit I specified.

I had never eaten a bagel before I went to Canada for a trek, and really liked the cinnamon/raisin ones, very dense, very yummy, very backpack-resistant.
Here's the fun bit: on the bag it said "English muffin"

Pro bagel recipe here, NY bagel here.

Anecdote: from here

How can we finish without the quintessential Jewish food, the bagel? Like most foods, there are legends surrounding the bagel. Rumors persist that the inventors of the bagel were Norwegians who couldn't otherwise get anyone to buy smoked salmon. Think about it: Can you picture yourself eating lox on white bread? A cracker? Naaa. They looked for something hard and almost indigestible which could support the spread of cream cheese and wouldn't take up too much
room on the plate. And why the hole? Many philosophers (mostly French and German) believe the hole is the essence of the bagel and the dough is only there for emphasis.

Yesterday they had many packages of these bagels at Coop in Würenlingen reduced by 50%. The sell by date was August 4. So I guess that is the end of the lot. Pity as they weren`t too bad if toasted. The bagels are made in Germany by a company called Aldente.

Re: Bagels in Coop, Bern

Yep, our last batch date was August 4th as well.... luckily I had the foresight to buy a few packs. Will just have to savour those last few and find something else to devour.

Thanks to everyone for their messages.... dare I start a debate about the other things I miss....
- Salt and Vinegar Hulahoops
- Decent Houmous (and no making your own isn't the same)
- Cumberland Sausages
- Golden Syrup (for when I do cook)

If anyone can shed any light on the above that would be great!
I'm pregnant and you don't want to be around me when I get a craving!!

Right you are:

Britshop is the place to go for Hulahoops and Golden Syrup.

For sausages, have a look at this tread.

Larger Coops sell Houmous (i.e. Ryfflihof) usually in the Fish section, it ain't half bad! Also, check out the Kebab stall in Markthalle they sell Houmous too.

Happy shopping!

The spelling more predominant in CH is Hummus. It's the same chickpea/tahine/olive oil/lemon juice dip.

I get mine (canned) from a turkish grocer, it's usually in the "canned specialties" section, right next to the dolmades (rice wrapped in wine leaves), filled eggplant etc. Unfortunately didn't find any websites of turkish or lebanese groceries in Bern.

Also, bigger Migros and Coop having a kosher aisle sell Telma brand Hummus, Falafel, Latke etc. mixes. Can be ordered online here. Discovered them researching longdistance backpack foods.

I just stopped at Coop on the way home from work and they have both plain and sesame bagels! Same area as the individual gipfeli, pretzels, etc.

The cashier had the codes on a Post-It - I don't know if that's just until they get the new code sheets, or if the bagels are (again) just temporary.

Yesterday my clients saw some Bagels Sesame/plain also in Coop in Klein Basel. I was so excited I will go by there and check it out to see if they are truly worth it.

Re: Bagels in Coop, Bern

These Coop bagels are reallly good! we lived 21 years in New York and they are as good as the ones we got there - my only regret is that the Coop doesn't have onion flavoured bagels!!
