I would suggest staying far away from meat sold in marinade. Don't want to frighten anyone but this is what they usually do to cuts which are close to their due date and the marinade helps to tenderise the meat and keep it for longer.
Wouldn't touch the stuff myself......most of it has MSG in it.

A MSG-free diet is a pretty difficult thing. You can hardly get any cold cuts , sausages or any other proccessed meat products without MSG in the supermarkets.

Re: Price of meat

Being an x butcher and knowing my meat quite well I can highly recommed getting friendly with a local farmer, even better one that is an evangelicist who has financial woes, a friend of mine asked me to participate in the purchase of a part of a steer he was slaughtering, I bought a hind quarter and it cost me sfr550 which is approx. £280.00.

Now I had no means of weighing it and I had to chop it up myself which was fun but compared to 1990 prices a hind quarter cost me £0.98 per lb x approx 300lb. So compared to what I got here I found here a fantastic deal, I also got to cut the meat how I wanted it and the dog had a field day with the bones.

Unfortunately, this sort of thing doesnt happen every day but my name is down for the next one I can tell you.

As for chickens this guy lets you choose which one you want and believing that the kill is all part of the eating experience and is spiritually cleansing ??????? He asks you if you can stomach it to do it yourself....

Not as hard as it sounds really, I wont go into detail because its nearly T - time but I must admit that eating 'Smokey' after I dispatched him was quite satisfying although the kids have not quite forgiven me yet....

We are joining a Swiss organisation Kag Freiland that promotes healthy and humane farming practices. Once we have passed the inspection we will be able to sell our eggs using their logo on the box. Our chickens BTW already live very happy and healthy lives!

The video on the link below shows the difference in lifestyles from (in this case) battery caged rabbits for supermarkets to the standards that they specify.

Beware, it's quite upsetting

that is just awful i feel sick i would NEVER eat a rabbit (or horse), how can anyone hurt a little bunny like that how they threw them into there small cages was very upsetting, and evil, how would they like to live in a small cage like a sardine with other humans, just because animals cannot speak does not mean they do not have feelings. I had rabbits when i was younger, and i loved them to bits. Please no-one eat rabbits, they are pets to be loved not eaten

Re: Price of meat

Another great read is Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan. Pollan traces four meals back to their origin: a McDonalds burger and fries, a Wild Oats "organic" dinner, a meal produced on a truly organic farm, and a meal he hunted and gathered himself. He compares the four different "ways" of eating from economic, environmental, and social standpoints...and makes it interesting! Seriously- I think I read it in two days.

I wouldn't buy processed meat products from a supermarket either...I like to know what I'm eating.

And I share the Aromat aversion! I have some American colleagues who discovered it in the restaurant at work here and asked me to bring some over every time I went States-side. Fortunately I found that the Coop makes an organic, MSG-free, version so I could oblige without a bad conscience!

Re: Price of meat

Ok, I just jumped onto a New Zealand supermarket website...

NZ Sirloin steak - NZD$19.99 per kilo (about chf 15)
Chicken drumsticks - $6.97 per kilo (about chf 5.22)

Doubt they'd deliver here, though.

Are the lakes not full of fish?

As was mentioned in your other thread by "Eastenders" the fishing is heavily controlled and regulated.

You can get freshwater fish from the lakes of Switzerland but there is care to make sure the lakes aren't overfished which would devastate the environmental balance.

Most readily available fish is imported.

From WorldRadio.ch, Go fish: Best of filets de perche:
Quote:
Perch is an indigenous species in Lake Léman but the local catch only covers about 6 percent of consumption—141,733 kg in 2005 according to the Office Fédérale de l’Environnement. Most of the filets come frozen from Estonia.
I seem to recall reading some time ago that some lakeside restaurants that advertise fresh fish actually use the frozen variety ... illegal but sometimes happens.

Re: Price of meat

A friend of mine was the category buyer for poultry at a major uk grocer. The horrific stories about some conditions for poultry in certain countries he assured me are all true. The quality aspect also leaves a lot to be desired. I now eat significantly less poultry / meat and have a list of countries from which I never buy any of the products.

Meat - Why So Expensive?

I am in UK at the moment and bought a joint of British roasting beef at £4.95 a Kilo. (less than CHF 8 per kilo).
I just can't afford to buy meat like this in switzerland and result in eating Cervalers.
Infact it was so tender that I sliced it and make grilled steaks out of it.
This kind of joint in Switzerland would cost me about CHF 30 per kilo.

What is the explanation for the huge price difference?
