Anyone seen cranberries for sale???

I've been on the lookout for cranberries for the past few weeks. According to this thread they're available in all the major grocery store chains in late autumn. However, I've checked Coop City, Globus, Manor and MMM Migros in Lausanne (both fresh and frozen sections) and haven't been able to find any yet.

I suspect I'm just a bit early for cranberry season, but for reasons that are a bit too complicated to explain here, I'd reallllllly like to get my hands on some fresh or frozen ones by mid next-week at the latest (i.e. 15.10.2008.)

Has anyone seen some for sale (with their won eyes) anywhere this early in the season? Somewhere in Lausanne/Geneva would be great, but I'll be in Bern/Luzern on Saturday and so could pick them up in that area if necessary.

Thanks in advance for any assistance that comes my way!

Heather

Re: Anyone seen cranberries for sale???

The American stores in Geneva and Nyon have cranberry sauce (in case as a back up to the fresh or frozen).
Ocean Spray Jellied Cranberry Sauce 454g

Ocean Spray Whole Berry Cranberry Sauce 454g
Both for "only" CHF 7.30 a can. They also have a shop-rite version that is a bit less expensive.

They also have pumpkin pie filling as well as canned yams.

If you need a killer Pecan Pie recipe, let me know before you go to the American store as you will need one ingredient from there.

If you need directions, see their website:

Re: Anyone seen cranberries for sale???

Hey Verbier,

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I actually need whole, unadulterated cranberries in this case, so the cranberry sauce won't quite do.

I'll keep my eyes peeled and my ears to the ground...

Re: Anyone seen cranberries for sale???

I saw fresh cranberries last year at Migros in Zurich as well as smaller Migros shops outside of Bern, where my husbands parents live (I think they were even Ocean Spray-not too surprising I guess, since they have a strangle-hold on the cranberry market), though I haven't seen them yet this year. . .it is probably too early. Also, Globus had them last year (and also has the infamous Libby's pumpkin in a can and condensed milk for your low-brow pumpkin pie needs). So, I'd say just wait a few more weeks and you'll be cran-tastic!

Re: Anyone seen cranberries for sale???

Hi Heather,

you may be lucky and the fresh or frozen ones will turn up in time, else, at a pinch, what about the glass preserves of Preiselbeeren?, can be found in all the stores if I remember rightly, Coop for sure. Preiselbeeren are a close relative to the Cranberry ( if it's of any help, Moosbeeren is the direct translation in German, just not commonly known).

Good luck in your quest,

Ros

Hi Heather

I saw cranberries at the Globus on Bhfstrasse (Zurich) last year, but it was later in November, closer to American Thanksgiving. Not much help, but I did see them!!

I have indeed seen cranberries for sale this season with my own eyes! Just last week, at the Migros in Brugg. I even made a note to myself to get a bag the next time I was there. It doesn't help you where you are, but I thought I would chime in anyway.

Thanks! I've seen them in Globus before too, but also closer to Christmas.

I was hoping against hope I could find some in the next week or so, but it seems like it's a bit of a pipe dream. And I feel a bit silly making such a big deal of it: the reason I want them is to make some cranana jam. I'm helping prepare a big food basket/present thingy for a friend, and this jam is their favourite jam in the entire world (yes, it really is that good). But I might have to go for blueberry in the end.

Heather

This gives me hope that they might appear in Lausanne sometime soon! Thanks very much for this information.

If all else fails, I do actually have a potential source in the 'Greater Boezberg Area' who could procure some for me if needs must....

Re: Anyone seen cranberries for sale???

They are called "Preiselberren" here, and you can get them at Spar, but not in the section selling the usual jams/preserves...look in the section where they sell tortillas, soy sauce, etc. I don't know why they put it there. Coop probably also stocks it.

Also, at the Ikea food shop by the exit you can buy big glass jars of Swedish cranberries (the ones they serve with Swedish meatballs), they call it lingonberry jelly.

Both are better than the Cranberry-in-a-can that comes out as one gelatinous can-shaped lump that you get in the US.

Re: Anyone seen cranberries for sale???

Hi Heather,

Two questions:

When is dinner? I need to make sure I am free

How many Thanks do I get for this one?

Anyhow. Globus Lausanne has fresh ones in a bag (340gm) from USA.

Enter by the rue Centrale doors directly into the food court. Directly behind the fresh fruit island is a cold display. They are there on the right hand side. If you can't see them, just ask the lady in the fruit section.

Best.

Have you tried farmer's markets? I can't recall seeing any this year but I am sure I have seen them in the past.

Re: Anyone seen cranberries for sale???

Not sure if it helps since its not near Lausanne but we had fresh cranberries from the USA in our Migros today (Sargans, SG). They were in the cool vegie section with the prepackaged lettuces etc. Good luck on your hunt

No, sorry Mr. Karl, Preiselbeeren are not Cranberries. Close, even closely related, but Cranberries are certainly NOT called Preiselbeeren here.

I just bought some today from Migros here in Lugano. A bit far to drive for you for cranberries! Hopefully they will be arriving soon to your area.

These are the brand Habelman Bros. Company from Wisconsin. All packing is in English and they cost 5.10 CHF per package.

I found them in the refrigerated section of the fruits and veggies.

This is not a scientific discussion of the species belonging to a plant family, Preiselbeeren is a perfect stand-in for cranberry during Thanksgiving...tastes virtually the same, I think even better.
