The smallish Coop on Talstrasse (or is it on Talacker?) in Zurich near Paradeplatz sells Bagels with cream cheese and salmon ... in the cooler where all the ready-to-eat sandwiches are located. Those bagels are not too bad.

A while ago I walked by the Bagel Shop in the Niederdorf and was so amazed that I walked in a bought a bagel. CHF 2.50!?! for a plain bagel and it wasn't even good. But it was a least a real bagel. Unless they have improved their recipe, I certainly won't be running out to them for a bagel fix, unless, of course, I hear that their bagels have improved and are more than just edible.
The bagel I bought at the American Bakery in the HB (a long time ago) was bread in the form of a bagel, which is not the same thing. In fact, every time I have gone after hints and suggestions of bagels in Zürich, it has always been simply bread disguised as a bagel.
*sigh* Oh well. There are so many wonderful things here in Switzerland and bagels are one of the few things that I miss from the US, so I guess life isn't as bad as it sometimes seems when I start remembering the fresh garlic bagels and chive cream cheese at my grandma's house.

If anyone goes over to Germany to Lidls to shop, keep an eye open for their 'American Week'. I know they've had par-cooked bagels the past couple of times they've featured American foods.....and they're not too bad.......so long as you remember to cook them in the oven first. (And not, as I stupidly did, ate them raw and then complained about how un-cooked they were!)

I made bagels once using this recipe and then turned out quite well: http://www.canadianliving.com/food/bagel_mania.php
The Back & Brau near Hardbrücke used to have great bagels, but shut down a couple? years ago.
I'll try to try some of the places people have suggested here.

I just bought 2 packages of Sesame bagels from the Jemoli yesterday-- and they were about 4 chf for 4. I also bought Orange Cheddar-- the first time I have found it here, which was very exciting. I know, it's a North American thing and it is a dye but it just feels right. This morning, we ate our bagels with Cheddar Cheese and thought we were in heaven.

A friend told me she had seen fresh bagels in the Orell Fuessli English bookshop on Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich, and...it's true! A whole display of stuff from Peace Foods--brownies, cookies, etc. This could get very dirty...

The canteen in Zollikon Hallenbad (Forbach) sells a range of readymade bagel sandwiches. Not bad for a quick salmon & cream cheese fix.

Surely it's cheaper to make your own ? http://hubpages.com/hub/Homemade_bag..._loaf_of_bread
I have never tried a 'real' bagel, but I'm curious enough to try cooking them some time...

There are several locations in and around Zurich for bagels. As mentioned before, many Coop locations carry both plain and sesame seed bagels in packages of four. The size of the bagels are about average. Books and Bagels ( http://www.booksnbagels.com/eng/), near Sihlcity shopping mall, has a large selection of bagels. The bagels are larger than the ones you get at Coop and delicious toasted with cream cheese. I purchased a half-dozen for about 17 CHF. Unfortunately, despite a good selection, they do not carry sweet style bagels such as my favouites, cinnamon and raisin and blueberry.
English bookstore Orell Füssli on Bahnhofstrasse did briefly carry bagels from Peace Foods ( http://www.peace-foods.ch/) but now have stopped. I did purchase one bag of 6 cinnamon and raisin bagels for 9 CHF and they were excellent. The bagels are smaller than the ones you get at Coop. You can order directly from Peach Foods and they deliver to all locations in Switzerland, convenient if you live in remote locations.

Hello bagellovers,
Since i lived in NY for several years, i was also going through bagel withdrawal symptoms, and decided to start baking myself. They are better than any i've tried here (usually it's bread in a bagel shape, as somebody already pointed out). I bake at least one batch a week, as they tend to disappear quickly. It kind of became a staple in our home very quickly (living with roommates).
If you like, i can bake any of you a batch as well (for whatever the ingredients cost, a few franks), as i'm baking them anyways. Let me know. So far i've been making plain and sesame ones.
Btw they store well in the freezer: you just cut them in half, freeze, and pop in the toaster when you're hungy.
Bagels rule,
Cheers,
Rosie

| | | Re: Bagels in Zurich Anyone? | Quote: | | | | | Hi wontonboy, not that I have been there but I have seen (somewhere on the forum) there is a place in Zurich called My Bagel.
The address is Niederdorfstrasse 41, Zurich.
Happy Bagelling! | | | | | I've just come back from an event at the American Womens club in Zurich and one guy from My Bagel made a big delivery for the ladies while I was there. I'm not a bagel expert but 60 American women this morning all told me they were just about as good as they get back "home".
Anyway, he gave me about 30 bagels to try (plain, sesame and onion) and they are free here at the Viadukt now, first come first served but max 4 each so I can get a broad opinion of them. I'm going to make a few bagel and cheddar sandwiches too. If they are popular we may get a regular delivery, say Fridays or Saturdays.
