I am in Lausanne and dying for sushi. I have eaten at the Tokyo fish market and am not expecting that here. What is available and how does it rate? ("rate" = (1) walked away from table; (2) comparable to supermarket sushi in the US; (3) rolls good but nigiri/sashimi left something to be desired; (4) rolls and nigiri/sashimi good but not great; (5) Tojo's in Vancouver or similar)

I don't eat sushi so I'm not talking from experience but I have a Japanese friend who has voiced opinions.

There is a Japanese restaurant in Lutry which has a very good reputation but my friend says it's only average and too expensive. I'm not 100% sure where it is now because it had a fire a while back and moved but here the 2 places it could be.

Across from the Nespresso building is a restaurant with a garden out front - it was in that building - this was the place that had the fire so it had moved from there about 18 months ago I think.

Further along towards Lausanne, "above" the harbour is a Mongolian restaurant - it was upstairs here. This is where it moved to during the renovations.

So not sure where it is now

The one place she does use is called Le Kotchi in Lausanne.

Usually she makes her own but if someone asks her Le Kotchi is what she suggests.

MYO in the park at Montbesson is highly regarded, and exhibits a high level of creativity.

There are about 20 sushi places in Geneva, all of which have at least some Japanese customers. My Japanese (and foodie) colleague is a big fan of Hashimoto. Apparently it's also a favourite of the staff at the Japanese mission to the UN.

I forgot to mention this website. Apparently Taiyo is well regarded too.

I do not know about any other restaurants in Lausanne, but if you happen to come to Geneva, the best Japanese restaurant is Uchino on route Suisse in Versoix. In my neighbourhood there are also two small, family-run restaurants with very good food -- Sansui and Kotobuki (both off rue Fort-Barreau).

I can also recommend Sansui, which is on Rue de la Faucille, just off rue Fort-Barreau as mentioned by LJM. I've eaten there a couple of times so far, and found it excellent and the staff very friendly, although I admit not to being a sushi expert (yet).

Conveniently for me it is right under my apartment but if you are travelling, it is about a 2 minute walk out of the back of Geneva station.

I am also a fan of sushi and in Lausanne, I have found the best is the takeaway from Uchitomi: and of course buying the ingredients there and making it myself.

Otherwise, in Geneva, try Nagomi at the rue de Zurich (very close to the train station), or else Hashimoto.

I tried Myo last weekend and while passable it was not excellent (also, their toro was a bit bizarre). I will try something else next time and keep you posted.

Have you tried the Beau Rivage Sushi bar, I love sushi and thought it was good there.

The Sushi Zen in the Lausanne Palace hotel - very pricey, they have some unusual sushi like unagi/ camambert or tuna quail egg
There is also a sushi restaurant at the Beau rivage- Very expensive
The Restaurant Ko-An is in Lutry but have never tried it.

Sushi restaurants in Lausanne:

Beau Rivage and Lausanne Palace are both great.

For take-away sushi - there's a little place on Rue de la Grotte, just down the steps from Rue du Midi which does decent sushi - if they have run out of what you want they will make it on the spot for you.

Chez Yoshi is in Chexbres which is about 10km. from Lausanne. It has very good sushi and has got very good reviews on local (i.e. French-speaking) websites. It is small and reservations are essential on the weekend. Expect to pay about CHF120 -150 for two people to include drinks and lots of different sushi and sashimi so it is not inexpensive.

There is a new Japanese Restaurant called Haiku in Riponne. I went there last week. The waitresses did not know the menu so I ordered a very disappointing meal. The decor is nice and the restaurant is huge, it might be the old Ripps restaurant. However they have scrimped on some of details; the floor, for example, is very uneven so don't go there if you are ****ed, because you might take a tumble!

They have censored me, I wrote pussed!

Tried out Hashimoto in Geneva today - it gets a thumbs up. Very fresh fish, real wasabi, excellent miso soup, and outstanding customer service - I did not have a reservation, and when I explained that I used to live in California, was dying for good sushi in Switzerland, and had come all the way from Lausanne, they seated me (with the condition that I only had an hour - no problems).

I suggest making a reservation (as clearly they are very busy - they turned away quite a few people while I was inhaling my food). They also do carry-out.

They are head and shoulders above Myo in Lausanne, where I paid more and had sushi of substantially lower quality.

Myo USED to be the best. It's a bit tired now.

Totally agree re: comments about Myo.
Sushi is really not up to scratch, yet, it costs about as much as Beau Rivage. They get a big thumbs up for atmosphere and friendliness however, location must be lovely in the summer too....if only the food could match that, they would have a great restaurant on their hands.
They seem to be resting on their laurels - I was there last week and the place was packed out - I guess they only way to help them raise their standards is to vote with one's feet.

New report: Sushi Bambou on the lake road in Pully. I had the sushi lunch plate which included miso soup, 4 pieces of nigiri, 5 pieces of 2 different rolls, 3 pieces of sashimi, and some kind of small side-dish of toast, for 26 CHF. The sushi was commensurate with the price and it was good enough that I'll return (this meal would be $15-20 at home).

My only negative comment is that they charged me 4.50 CHF (4.50 CHF!!!!!) for green tea, which should be free.

They have now a decent website : www.sushi-zen.ch where you can browse all sushis. Sushi Zen have also 3 take away, 2 in Lausanne and a new one in Morges.

I just moved here to be with my wie in Lausanne, I came from NYC.... The one place in Lausanne for good sushi, served by japanese chefs is at Lausanne Palace, its called Sushi Zen.... Its pretty good, its going to cost you at least 100 chf per person, but I would reccommend it, the sake selection is pretty good too....
