| | | Coffee beans -mail order or place close to Lausanne?
Hi,
I am trying to find a local (preferably a Swiss roaster) source for good roasted coffee beans (I am looking for Kenya AA+, Mocha, etc., not mixes). I know plenty of places to buy the beans back in US but ordering on regular basis from there is too costly.
Thanks a lot,
Miss Kitty

This search for "café en grains" restricted to Swiss sites should give you some possibilities until someone with firsthand experience adds more.
Happy coffee drinking |

And, in the nicest possible way, there are many similar threads on the Forum on where to get good coffee in this lovely country |

Thanks for the fast replies! Yes, I've tried to google and found a few shops (most of them in Zurich). None of them sell the pure beans that I want. I did not know about the museums, they look interesting, but at the first glance they do not have the beans either, only blends.
It is amazing that this relatively small country has two museums devoted to coffee and in any appliances shop one can find at least a dozen of coffee machines. Yet there are no coffee roasters, people seem happy to use only beans from Migros/Coop where the majority of blends have tons of Robusta in them. Kind of strange?
Uncle Max, I think I've read quite a few threads on this forum devoted to coffee, but most of them are discussing which Nespresso coffee machine to buy. I could not locate a single thread from people who make their own blends from freshly roasted beans (I am not even mentioning that I could not locate any discussion about roasting). While my preferences may seem superfluous, I do have strong likes and dislikes in terms of beans, their freshness and roasts. And I like to have a nice cup of coffee early in the morning, in my own kitchen. I would be very grateful if you could direct me to any thread I missed.

Pleased you're taking such a keen interest
If you think this place is coffee_crazy, jump across the border into Italy. Every village seems to have its own Brand; it's heaven.
Not being such a gourmet as to roast my own (yes, I grind each morning but it's still only a drink, like wine, not something I get too technical over) I'd suggest you find a cafe you like and ask who supplies their stuff.
I'm a fan of cafe noir (site in German only, but you could always ring and have a chat, they speak English above the din of the roaster) in Zurich.
To think you can get a perfect caffe solo for less than one Euro just over them thar hills...

I think there are a couple of roasters in Geneva. I will do a bit of Googling to see what I find.
It is good that you are specific about the types of beans you are looking for.
If we are lucky, I will post the "leads".

I buy my coffee beans from Real Café, a small roaster in Uznach (ZH) - they'll ship pretty much anywhere, delivery takes about two days. http://www.real-cafe.ch/home/news/
I like a strong coffee, so I usually order the Napoli beans from their Italian line. Prices are quite reasonable.

Thanks again for all the replies! It was very sweet of you, Verbier, to google for me, my French is still very bad and I was not able not figure out how to search for roasters. Thank you!
I checked the links and some of them do seem to have good pure beans. I will post more information after I try to order and taste them. I also took Uncle Max advice seriously and went through Lausanne drinking coffee at every corner. After 6 or 7 cups I was really in need of some else, so I went into a Salon de The that is very close to the Post Office on Riponne. I always liked the fancy cups that were displayed there, but never actually got inside.
To my surprise, they have roasted coffee beans there! I understood that they roast it themselves! They had my beloved Kenya AA, some Super Mocha mix, Sumatra, etc. The lady said that her husband roasts the beans and only he knows exactly what gets into the mixes, so I will try to get hold of the husband some other day.
I got Kenya and Mocha and will try them tomorrow (for today it is already too much ).
Thanks again everyone who replied, I really appreciate your input!

Try this website: http://www.schwarzenbach.ch/index.cf.../s_level/10180
You can mail order, and they do carry some varietals, in addition to their own blends. They roast every Thursday, so you might try timing your order then.

You are in luck...
Right around the corner from where I live, there is a really good coffee roaster, who also has a lot of specialty brands. It's a small little place and I constantly only see people going in and out from there. The smell from the place is fantastic and the owner - looks fairly young - looks like he really enjoys what he does.
I don't remember the name of the place, but it is at Pont-du-Chailly shopping area on Avenue de Chaillly, right next to the BCV and across from the Post Office and the Coop.
If you drive past on Avenue de Chailly you are likely to miss it, since the place is small. Park your car and go walking to find it.
Usually he is closed Monday mornings, but seems to be open continuesly the rest of the week. (Must be all that nice coffee keeping him awake)....

Is that Papa Johns? I was just going to suggest him. He roasts his own beans. Not sure he has the ones that the OP is looking for specifically.
The guy is young but he inherited the place from his father & grandfather before him. He's very sweet guy and you can practice your french with him. He also have good quality artisanal teas, cakes, sweets, pasta, etc.

It's one of my favorite* little shops in Lausanne.
*Well, except when last Christmas they sold the tea pot I wanted & then refuse to order me another one....

Miss Kitty | | | | | Have you looked at La Semeuse?
I really like their coffee:- http://lasemeuse.ch/index.php?lang=en
Favourites from there:- Ethiopia Pure Origin whole beans (From the birthplace of Arabica coffees) and whole bean Versailles(Blend of coffees from Brazil, Columbia, Costa Rica and Mexico. 100% Arabica.)
Lasemeuse is 93 kilometres from your place.
Cheers Steve

I bought coffee once from a really really yummy roaster in Bern. They had a sample pack of 4 different kinds. I remember it was a suggestion on the Yahoo group. Since I'm not a remember there any more I can't look up the place. Anyone have access to the Yahoo group to do a search for me?
