Pumpkin Puree

Hello everyone!

Do you have any idea where I can find canned pumpkin (like Libby's etc.) in Lausanne. I tried Coop, Manor and Globus, so far no luck!

Re: Pumpkin Puree

If you can't get your hands on canned pumpkin, and are desperate- you can make it fresh quite easily.

1. Buy a pumpkin. I quite like butternut, but if you ask for a fairly sweet pumpkin, it should work.
2. Preheat your oven to about 150/160 celcius.
3. Cut the pumpkin, remove all seeds and as much of the stringy stuff as possible. I usually cut it in quarters and run a paring knife over the middle.
4. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for until tender. For a medium sized pumpkin should take you an hour.
5. Scrape the flesh away from the skin, let the flesh cool.
6. Blitz it in a blender, and strain to remove any remaining stringy bits.

Voila. Pureed pumpkin. Still, good luck!

I.

Re: Pumpkin Puree

You can cut up pumpkin, put it in a bowl, add a little water and microwave it for a few minutes till tender, drain and purée.

You'll find your pie will be just as delicious, but alot lighter.
(But still a killer in calories! )

There's a new store called Comptoir des Ameriques which opened about 2 months ago. They have all this stuff.

Re: Pumpkin Puree

I might have to try the microwave process. Roasting it is how I've always done it- but... I will test this! Thanks for the idea!

Re: Pumpkin Puree

You can also order it on line at the American Market (CHF3.80) or take a trip to Nyon & pick some up.

Where to get canned pumpkin in Zurich?

Hi,

I've just remembered it's time to make my annual pumpkin pie but have no idea where to find canned pumpkin in Zurich. Any ideas? (No, I don't want to use fresh pumpkin -- been there, done that, too much work.)

Many thanks,
JW

Re: Where to get canned pumpkin in Zurich?

I saw on another thread that it is available at Globus. Does anybody know how much it costs at Globus? I too don't want to put the effort into fresh pumpkin as I have about six or seven other dishes I am working on for my Swiss Thanksgiving dinner this week.

Re: Where to get canned pumpkin in Zurich?

I went to the globus on bahnhofstrasse and they're sold out. Jelmoli hasn't carried it in 5 years, so I'm checking the Bellevue location of Globus and the English Orel Füsseli (sp?) bookstore tonight. And then I give up. Good luck!

I'm still looking for it too! Good idea, the Bellevue Globus - I didn't think to check there. (Orel Füssli has groceries?)

If they don't have it I reckon I will be figuring out how to butcher a pumpkin tomorrow night.

Re: Pumpkin Puree

Nope, no joy at either of those, so I am now the proud owner of half a Coop pumpkin. Gulp.
(Normally it wouldn't faze me... but as far as I'm concerned Thanksgiving is no time to experiment, especially on anything this important!)

The pumpkin looks nice though - very very orange and not as stringy as what I'd find in the States. Fingers crossed...

Re: Pumpkin Puree

Does anybody know if the Globus in Zurich has Libby's in yet this season? A friend of mine is in town until Tuesday and I promised him pumpkin cookies if I could find the puree - I don't feel like messing with real pumpkins for this!!
I checked the Globus in Basel but had no luck, not even sure if they normally carry it. I've purchased many cans from the Globus on Bahnhofstrasse over the past few years so I have my fingers crossed that it's not too early in the season and will be able to find some.

Re: Pumpkin Puree

Migros has fresh, already de-seeded pumpkin slices right now. So, less hassle with all the goodness and taste.

Re: Pumpkin Puree

Check the London Store in Zug. I vaguely recall seeing Libby's pumpkin purée there last year.

Re: Pumpkin Puree

I had a piece of pumpkin yesterday and thought I'd cook it up to make a custard. The pumpkin was stringy... like spaghetti squash. the taste was ok... but....this was the big, roundish pumpkin with indentations at the top and bottom (US pie pumpkins are rounder).

What sorts of pumpkins are best for making pies? what's your experience been?

Thanks
