Celery Salt

Ok foodies, someone posted a recipe for KFC style chicken, and it asks for celery salt. I've tried the usual Migros, Co-op etc and no joy, so has anyone seen it on here, and what's the German name for it.

Re: Celery Salt

Have you Globus and/or Jelmoli supermarkets? Globus seems to have almost anything...

German word is Sellerie-salz.

Re: Celery Salt

I have found it in Coop but to be on the safe side, try Jelmoli, I'd be very suprised if they haven't got it.

(I've no idea why you'd want to be making Kentucky Schreid *icken though)

Re: Celery Salt

Don't buy celery salt - buy celery seeds and then add salt.

Re: Celery Salt

I'm very surprised that nobody has marketed a sachet of 11 herbs and spices for fried chicken. Its not like KFC could sue since they would then have to confirm that the recipe breaches their trademark.. if thats still valid?

Re: Celery Salt

I bought celery salt at the Globus. I never ever used it & can't even remember what my intention was when I bought it.
Can you please tell me where this recipe is? How much of this celery salt does it call for? A bottle?

Two other uses spring to mind:

- For dipping quails or gulls eggs
- Bloody Marys

Re: Celery Salt

Here goes, this is a cut and paste from the thread, I deleted any potentially sensitive words.... for the benefit of the post police. Somebody may have seen it or had ago at making it, if so I'd like to know if it's any good.... and wtf is MSG, I thought that stuff was done away with?

1/2 tsp thyme
1/2 tsp basil
1/2 tsp oregano
1 tbsp celery salt
1 tbsp black pepper
1 tbsp dry mustard
4 tbsp paprika
2 tsp garlic salt
1 tsp ground ginger

2 cups flour

EXTRAS:

1/2 tsp salt
3 tbsp MSG (Accent)

Method:

Mix all ingredients well in a large bowl.

Dip chicken pieces in beaten eggs, then turn them over in regular bread crumbs (commercial). Finally plunge them in the flour-spices mixture (above)

Heat oven to 350 degrees, place chicken in a tray and cover with foil (shiny side out). Cook 40 minutes. Remove the foil then cook for another 40 minutes. Baste lightly with oil 5 minutes before the end.

Let stand 5 minutes and serve

Re: Celery Salt

Hi,

I made it the other night. Was really nice. I couldn't find any celery salt either but even so, it tasted good.

snip wtf is MSG,

Monosodium Glutomate = taste powder used in some Chinese cooking (poorer quality). It's the junk that enhances taste but makes you really really thirsty later on. I hate it and it's the main reason I don't buy chinese take-away very often.

Thanks for the recipe.

Did you really cook the chicken pieces for 1 hour and 20 minutes at 180'C?

I would have thought that half that time was ample.

I wouldn't cook a whole chicken for that long.

Re: Celery Salt

Maybe Herbamare is a substitute? The main ingredient of the spice mix is celery.

Sorry, I missed that bit.

If you do, you may want to cook it for less time!
