Re: Beer Beer Beer

enjoyed this thread... 3 mos in Basel and the local beers are not fitting the bill for me. felt vindicated by this thread and the following link:

http://www.ratebeer.com/Beer/feldsch...original/6620/

16th %tile not so good, and about where i'd put it.

will look out for some of the beers mentioned above, but can relate to Cal Dreaming on the need for some heavy hops. Sierra Nevada / Hop Devil / Dogfish 90' imperial. Anyone have recommendations for IPAs available?

Re: Beer Beer Beer

http://beeradvocate.com/ is quite a resource. You can search by place and get tasting notes on beers.

Seems to cover a few places in Switzerland too.

Re: Beer Beer Beer

The dark clouds of beer monopoly are on the horizon and will reach four Swiss cities in a few weeks, therefor I think it is time to update this thread and post some new information and experiences!

I have some good news, Bier Paul must have had some success in the last year. I encounter it more often in the city and had occasions to taste most of their brews.

bier paul 01 - their Lager-y beer from barley and hop. I like it.
bier paul 02 - unfiltered black beer made with two malts. I don't like the slightly bitter taste.
bier paul 04 - the summer edition. Barley and a bit wheat. Between Lager and white beer in taste, top.
bier paul 06 - a Stout that they brew in spring. Bitter and only slighty sweet. The second one is better than the first. Oh and the third one better than the second.

Check the Erusbacher website for bars and shops that sell bier paul in the canton. There's a Rampenverkauf in Zurich Wiedikon.

Also I haven't recommended Barbara from Eichhof. (This last big independent brewery was recently bought.) I don't know how to describe it but I even think it's a good first step for those who only like Lager so far!

or the soleil blanc in fribourg, a fine "red" bier on tap from the wee brewery just up the street.

Re: Beer Beer Beer

A cool thing about the Feldschlösschen factory in Rheinfelden is that there's still a stable with six horses that draw the company's traditional beer carriage from time to time.

Feldschlösschen Lager is nothing outstanding but Feldschlösschen Hopfenperle is okay.

Re: Beer Beer Beer

There is only one real brewery in Rhienfelden, and it is not Feldschlösschen

Try the beers from Richie Braü, they are worth searching out :

Re: Beer Beer Beer

Looks interesting, but they could've been a bit more creative with the beer names!

ps. I've tested the already mentioned Unser Bier lager from Basel, it was good but had a bit little character for a microbrew.

The names are not great, but they concentrate more the beer than the "Marketing", which imho this case is better

The Unser beer is great, but as you say not a lot of character. But Unser are getting large (and about to move to larger premises), so may not be the most creative sometimes - the seasonal beers are great (Fasnacht/FCB Champions beer etc), the "normal" hell is only average, but better than "feld". The amber if by far the best "everyday" Unser beer.

For the good Basel microbrew beer one must hunt out the beers from the "Käppelijoch" brewery or the almost, but not quite as good, "Ueli" beer from Fischerstube/Linde over in Kleinbasel.

The brewery in Baar is quite good. If you are in the area, give it
a try!

Looking at the website - I cannot see any opening times to have a beer at the brewery itself - normally the best place to have a beer . Can you recommend a place to drink it "on tap"?

YES! My #1 beer is Baarer Goldmondi......and of course, #2 is Appenzeller Quolfrisch, #3 lighter - Eichoff #3 heavier - Oofi. I'm back to Schweiz in 2 weeks, so I look forward to enjoying them all and EuroCup.

Re: Beer Beer Beer

Greetings, beer lovers!

...If you're kinda desperate and really need something that's drinkable and close to enjoyable, I can suggest Denner supermarket brand beer. Tempting as it is to cringe at the thought, at 50 Rappen a pop it's definitely palatable. At the very least you can use it to whip up a summer afternoon shandy.

Enjoy!

Re: Beer Beer Beer

Ma favourite ones are Castle, Amstel and Windhoek... Sometimes they are available in Pickwick Pub or else you need to go to RSA or Namibia
