Food banks?

Can anyone tell me whether or not the notion of food banks exists in Switzerland? Where I used to live, most supermarkets have a bin/cage where people can "donate" non-perishable, non-expired food items (usually canned, dried or packet "just-add-water" foods) that they either bought too much of, don't want, or perhaps in the case of a family, the kids did not like. These donated foods go to shelters charity organisations to feed the poor and/or homeless.

Thanks in advance for any tips

ps. many supermarkets also had a bin for pet food to be donated to the local animal shelters Sad to not see that here... or at least not be made obvious.

Re: Food banks?

In Australia, they had this. In Switzerland, organisations like this ( German to English translated site here ) do the distribution having obtained inventory from major stores, and quite possibly from direct donors.

Re: Food banks?

In the hopes to revive this thread --- I am having a pre-spring clean and changing my eating habits to ones more healthy, I read the linked translated websites and it was clear where to get food from, but unclear where i might be able to donate in date canned and packaged goods.

Is anyone aware of points i might be able to drop food off at?

Thanks in advance for any help
