what do you class as normal bacon??

British bacon is like this, thicker and less fatty compared to the wafer thin streaky smoked bacon you get here

Mmmmmm mouth is watering, that would go great with that sliced white bread from coop

Sutter - still haven't found any bacon in Aldi that rivals back bacon?? iaer there several types?

Have you tried the online shop by migros, they sell british food, including British Bacon, it is expensive, and too chewie for me, but other people like it.

alot of bacon in UK supermarkets is from denmark (don't ask me why)
now with sourcing locally, people want bacon from british pigs (from a local farm) this is normally more expensive & you would need to go to your local butchers. but in the big supermarkets it is still danish bacon that is popular.

afterthought :jamie oliver (as much as i sometimes loath him) did a campaign to save british bacon here is an article
and here is denmark's response

Re: where to find these

One of the biggest brand names for bacon in Britain is called Danish. It's proper name is back bacon.

I think so much bacon is Danish because (a) the Danes can produce it more cheaply than the British, and (b) well-targetted advertising campaigns.

It's because Danish pigs have six legs, thus providing more ham for each pig. It's not commonly known outside of Denmark, although it's something of an open secret among the pig-farming community.

The first six legged pig was bred shortly after the Second World War in response to the increased demand for pork products from returning soldiers, eager to get back to a regular ration of rashers each morning, after years of eating toasted rat in North Africa and elsewhere. Danish agricultural scientists have remained notoriously tight-lipped about the methods they used to breed this abomination, but sources close to the Danish Agricultural Ministry have suggested that cockroaches were involved, after several abortive efforts to cross a pig with a spider merely resulted in an eight legged pig that ran away too fast for the slaughterhouse staff to catch it.

The six legged pig may also be found living wild in parts of the highlands of Haiti, after a breeding pair escaped from a Country Fair in Port au Prince in 1972. Here is an example of one caught by my second cousin Boniface during a crab hunting expedition in Hinche last summer:

As you can see, the Haitian six legged pig is a meagre beast, an atavistic insult to the mighty specimens presented upon the tables of the United Kingdom every morning for breakfast.

But the picture should give you a general idea of what a six legged pig is like, all the same.

Re: where to find these

As I understand it (although this was a few years back) all British pigs have to have outside runs or be free range. In Denmark they can keep pigs indoors in tiny concrete enclosures. Therefore the meat is cheaper to produce.

As far as animal welfare goes though, pay the extra for British (it is far far superior in taste as well)

And British bacon is made from leaner back cuts, Swiss and Italian etc from belly (known in the UK as streaky)

Re: where to find these

I don't know about the Coop in Baer, but the Coop in Dietikon has many of these items (Super Coop are the larger stores, usually they carry much more in stock and inventory). Check Sihl-City as well.

sliced bread - Migros or Coop near the fresh-baked items.

green cap fresh milk - Skimmed milk (or lactose-free milk) can be found in either Migros or Coop

baked beans - Coop for certain (Heinz is the brand name). Also check Jelmoli on Bahnhofstr, Zurich.

JnJ Baby Wash - Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo is sold in Coop, not sure about the baby wash though.

2 or 5 kg Rice bag - Denner is currently having a sale on Jasmine rice, 5kg bags at CHF 8.45. Also, check some of the Asian and Indien stores at the larger shopping centers like Spreitenbach or Glattbrugg.

Wheat Flour - Migros Brunau Park or Coop Sihl City

Green Chillies - Migros in Brunau Park have them. There are some Mexican and Spanish shops near Volkshaus, Zurich that may have them as well, but not too sure.

Hope you find all that you're looking for. Peace

As you aparently have some insight into pig-farming: Do they breed two-headed pigs anywhere? I would love to have the huge neck-piece in between the heads for an Über-Schwenkbraten.

Even average gas stations sell wheat flour... so to drive from Zug all the way to Dietikon to get all the pretty average products (except of whatever that baby thing is) might be not really the ideal advice...
