Just give your kefir grains some time to revitalize, and don't drink the kefir they produce during the first week. Buon appetito!

www.tsarina.ch sell Smetana / Kefir / Buckwheat and other Russian delectables.

Not the cheapest, but there you are.

Larry
You can find very good kefir, smetana, tvorog, etc. (real ones - produced in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia) in Geneva "Plainpalais" shop. Bvd Pont d'Arve 28, just opposite to Uni Mail. Also the largest choice of East European Beer ever seen in Switzerland (Baltika-all numbers, Obolon, Krusovice, Ziwiec, Tyskie, Lech, Ursus, Gambrinus, Staropramen, Lobkowicz, Sibirskaja Korona, Nevskoje, Ochakovo, Kilikia, Karlovacko, many others).

Re: Kefir

Kefir is delicious, but unfortunatelly, I haven't found any shop where it is selled in big bottles, they are normally quite small. I read some time ago, that it is possible to produce kefir at home, but it is necessary a special kind of mushroom. I don't know if it is possible to buy it. Does anybody have any information about it?

Re: Kefir

We just spent the weekend with friends who like to drink Kefir - they make it easily with a little of the fresh kefir mixed with milk that has been warmed. Same method as yoghurt, I think...

I'll take a look next time I'm doing the shopping tour in Zurich - I suspect it might be available at the Turkish grocery store...

Re: Kefir

Most of the grocery stores in Germany have a far better selection of kefirs than do Swiss ones... Grab a few if you are there shopping.

I like the vanilla flavored one.

(of course this information is useless in Switzerland)

Re: Kefir

I have also been looking for kefir for years. I used to make Yoghurt and cheese spread from it. If anyone has the live white spongy fungus and want to give me a piece I will be Extremely grateful.

Re: Kefir

Fortunately, in Geneva we don't have these problems. Very good kefir is available in many shops, such as La Perla, Plainpalais, Pam Meyrin, Pam Servette, etc.

Re: Kefir

Haven't gotten around to it yet, but there are Kefir balls on www.ricardo.ch (auction site). I think that's what you're looking for.

I guess, this shop doesn't exist anymore. However you can find much larger (and for reasonable price) choice of Russian and Polish stuff, including lots of kefir here:
