I grew up on it, it is the healthiest drink you can get. Now, what you buy in stores isn't the real kefir as I found on this site but it does sound little like a school scientific project/fairy tale.. I am going to buy some tomorrow, I think I saw it in Migros. Not the real thing but I bet it is healthy too.

| | | Re: Kefir Kefir's tart and refreshing flavor is similar to a drinking-style yogurt, but it contains beneficial yeast as well as friendly 'probiotic' bacteria found in yogurt. The naturally occurring bacteria and yeast in kefir combine symbiotically to give superior health benefits when consumed regularly. It is loaded with valuable vitamins and minerals and contains easily digestible complete proteins. For the lactose intolerant, kefir's abundance of beneficial yeast and bacteria provide lactase, an enzyme which consumes most of the lactose left after the culturing process. Kefir can be made from any type of milk, cow, goat or sheep, coconut, rice or soy. Although it is slightly mucous forming, the mucous has a "clean" quality to it that creates ideal conditions in the digestive tract for the colonization of friendly bacteria. Kefir is made from gelatinous white or yellow particles called "grains." This makes kefir unique, as no other milk culture forms grains. These grains contain the bacteria/yeast mixture clumped together with casein (milk proteins) and complex sugars. They look like pieces of coral or small clumps of cauliflower and range from the size of a grain of wheat to that of a hazelnut. Some of the grains have been known to grow in large flat sheets that can be big enough to cover your hand!. The grains ferment the milk, incorporating their friendly organisms to create the cultured product. The grains are then removed with a strainer before consumption of the kefir and added to a new batch of milk. http://www.kefir.net/intro.htm | | This user would like to thank DELTA76 for this useful post: | |

it's a drink made with milk mixed with a special grain (Kefir) left to ferment for a bit and it goes slightly sour, fizzy and yoghurty. Sort of. It's very refreshing. If you go further east they drink Ayran which is yoghurt mixed with water. Also good.

I'm interested in buying ready made Kefir but I didn't find at Migros or Coop in the place that I live. Maybe in a Migros or Coop in Zurich?

Hi Princessduck,
Take Bus 38 (or a bike, it would be nice, one hour trip over the Rhine) and go to Grenzach on the German side of the border. There is a supermarket there called Hieber's Frische Center. When I was there last time they have had two kinds of Kefir available.
Regards,
Piotr

Hi, janijean,
I have merged the threads for future kefir lovers, so they have all the handy info in one place when they look for it. Hope somebody will know where to find the grains in Basel, good luck.
(and yes, to previous poster asking me, I talk to my kefir grains every evening )

Ebay is full of people selling kefir grains.
Instead of buying it at Coop or Migros, save yourself some money, and buy grans for less than 10 CHF (with shipping) on ebay.
P.S. I'm not selling kefir grains on ebay
