| | | Scottish food in Switzerland?
Hi,
Are there any Scottish expats on here who know of a shop which sells some of our food items or a decent website to get them delivered?
This is an attempt to get some food for my host family so I can give them a taste of our unhealthy but yummy food, but I wouldn't mind a bit for myself I couldn't fit much in my suitcase... and the shortbread and tablet I brought disappeared very quickly, understandably!
Thanks in advance,
Hannah

Hi Hannah
if you look hard enough, you will find someone who sells "proper" Scottish cheese (and the Isle of Mull Cheddar is about the best Cheddar in the world and I'm only a quarter Scottish). Errrr - Orkney Oat Cakes as well .
Not sure about deep fries Mars bars though |

Hello
The coop in SihlCity sells shortbread and other biscuits, scotch abernethy too iirc. They also sell Aberdeen Angus steak and I think Scottish reared lamb. They also sell some Scottish cheese.

Jelmoli in Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich has tins of Irn Bru at CHF1.90 each.
The Orelli Fusseli English bookshop just down the road from there has a small selection of British sweets, sauces and marmalades upstairs.
All the major department stores sell Walkers biscuits as does Migros.
A lot of the bigger co-ops have been stocking various Mcvities biscuits and Heinz beans for a while and this seems to be spreading to the smaller branches now too.
The London Store in Zug has the best selection of UK /Scottish food (but a poor level of customer service in my opinion.) http://www.londonstore.ch |

And don't forget the traditional Glasgow Breakfast:
Two fags and a bottle of Sunny Delight consumed in the back of a white van on the way to an illegal building job. Just the ticket after a night on the Buckies.
Cheers,
Nick

I'm glad to see our reputation remains undeminished, even this far away from home. A can of scud and a fudgy donut please!
Had no idea that Jelmoli did Irn-Bru, and at only CHF 1.90 a pop, it is only a quarter of the price of the beer that got you the hangover in the first place!
Hannah, Sihl City is about 15 mins from the Hauptbahnhof on the tram 13, direction Albisgütli. The stop you want is called Sihl City nord I think. If you need further advice, feel free to PM.

Thanks to all who gave me directions to places. I will hunt them down tomorrow, and will without a doubt bring back some irn bru for 1.90!

As a comedian recently quipped....
"I love the Scottish; the only people on earth with absolutely no fear of scurvy."
Cheers

When hearing about "Scottish ...." I do not think about food really ! I however twice in a restaurant in London which declares itself to be Scottish, ate a most excellent steak. And so, it might not be so negative after all. In Edinburgh however, when I went out of the hotel at 8.30pm, all restaurants were closed with the exception of a great Indian restaurant on the hill halfway between the old and the new castle. I spoke with the waiter there who with a heavy smile explained "you see this is their Calvinist ethics ! " In Glasgow, on the same trip, I went to a Chinese restaurant, and then, back over the border in Newcastle it was Indian again. I had done a kind of excursion out of London, first by flight to Edinburgh-Turnhouse-Airport, then after a night and a day per evening train over to Glasgow, again a night and a day and by a late evening flight from Glasgow-Abbotsinch to Newcastle. From there a day later back to London.

| | | Re: Scottish food in Switzerland? Its so nice to see people talking about Scottish food. When my grandparents visit they always bring over a roll of black pudding from the butchers....as my grandpa has eaten that every morning for year- even when on holidays! Dont you just love older generations?! I think you end up getting used to buying swiss based things but look forward to eating different things when you are back home in Scotland for visits. Well thats what I do anyway. I hope you got some Scottish foods and drinks Hannah |

Looks like meat - kebab meat indeed. Gentlemen, we have reached the confines of the known world, where food fusion becomes confusion. Kebab pizza deep-fried Scottish style. This is the new Europe. Pass the oyster sauce please. | | | | | | |
