| | | Fish, German names translated
Greetings all,
I am a LOVER of fish, mostly from the sea but I do also like Trout, Perch and freshwater Catfish.
I had such a hard time identifying my favorite kinds of Fish & Seafood at the supermarket, so I put together a list of the names translated into how they are known in English. Hope it makes your lives easier: Kabeljau - Cod Steinbutt - Turbot Flusskrebs - Crayfish Wolfbarsch - Wild Bass, Sea Bass Brasse - Sea Bream Seezunge - Sole Seesaibling - Atlantic Char Hummer - Lobster Auster - Oyster Krebs, Krabbe - Crabs Seelachs - Coley, Cod Family, cook with strong flavours Seehechts - Hake, Saithe Goldbutt - Plaice Seeteufel - Monkfish, Angler Pangasius - Catfish Zander - Zander, Pike Perch, member of the Perch family Claresse - European Catfish, cook with strong flavours Echte Rotzungen - Lemon Sole, Dab Rotbarsch - Atlantic Ocean Perch, Redfish Egli - Freshwater Perch Tintenfish - Octopus Kalmar - Squid
Happy eating !

Hi Grant Green,
Sorry don't know of any Fish market here, perhaps other members can help. I buy my fish from my local Migros. They have a good selection and the fish is good.

For the Indians out there, can you recommend names of some fish that work well with Curry esp south indian style. Also which shop would be a good one to pick them up in zurich. Recommendations from coop or migros would work well.

India Grocery Store on Josefstr at Langstr sells cheap, fresh fish. MUCH cheaper than Migros.
Get the Kingfish there for S Indian curry. Mackerel is also a good strong fish for S Indian curry. I sometime use red snapper too for a lighter taste.
The owner makes a wicked pan-fried panagasius with curry sauce for his curry lunches.

Hi Bindu,
I know the following fish that are used in Indian cuisine: Vanjiram : King fish Koduva : Sea Bass Viraal : Murrel Karuppu Vavval : Black Pomfret Vellai Vavval : Silver Pomfret Sura : Baby Shark Sankara : Red Snapper Kilanga : Smelt Sudumbu : False Trevally Rawas: Indian Salmon Gobro: Rock Cod Rohu: Greas Carp Murdoshi: Lady Fish Sangtam: Cat Fish (A fresh water fish) Shevto: Mullet Bangda: Mackerel Sardines: Hilsa: a fresh water fish; can be substituted with cod fish
For strong flavoured spicy recipes, use meatier, stronger, firmer types of fish such as King fish, Cod or Cat fish. For more delciate recipes, use more delicate fish such as little pomfrets or snappers.
I've seen quite a few types of Fish for sale at Aggarwal's supermarket. http://www.aggarwal.ch/ . Mind you, the location on the website on Langstrasse is not the new store. They've opened a really nice, newer and larger store a couple of minutes walk from the old place. Go to the old one, ask them and they'll tell you.

Tilapia is a very clean, mild flavoured firm white freshwater fish. Some even call it the 'Chicken of the Sea' as it can be used for any and all recipes. Check the Asian or African stores, they will certainly have them.

For south Indian style curry both Bangda, Silver Pomfret go very good. I would say these are better available at south Indians shops - SKT and Perinpam this is on the parallel lane of SKT, this might help . I prefer Prawns in south Indian style and Barkat has different options for prawns, I could certainly recommend Prawns from Barkat. |

You forgot: Forelle - Trout (don't be conned by Lachsforellen they are just normal trout to that have been fed a pigment to make them look like salmon)
Aesche - Grayling, probably one of the best freshwater fish at all but not easy to find in shops, (easy to catch though) | | The following 2 users would like to thank Uk's for this useful post: | |

For those who are interested - I found BIO Tilapia at migros the other day. Though pricey at 11 sfr for 300 grams (4 small fillets)

Yes, MUCH cheaper Tilapia at the store I mentioned above (Josef at Lang).
For fresh fish, you never pay more than CHF18/kg and that's for the best cut (middle) of dense fish such as Kingfish, Tuna, Salmon. Other fish are cheaper. And there are frozen varieties available as well. Fresh crab and prawns available too.

Good shops for fish are Globus Delicatessa and Jelmoli Delikatessen (both near Bahnhofstrasse Zurich). And you should try Dörig: http://www.der-frisch-fisch.ch/site/index.cfm 8953 Dietikon
