Re: Off to London for a Holiday ! What are you dying to eat?!

I am dying for some decent Middle Eastern food.... humus, baba ghanouj, grilled halloumi cheese, fresh falafel, spinach pastry parcels, Kibebeh stuffed with lamb and pine nuts etc.. If you're in London, have a Lebanese for me (Maroush, Al-Dar or Arez on Edgware Rd).

Just tried 2 weeks ago for the first time Nando's chicken Peri peri (which in Portuguese is called Piri-Piri) and I must say it is very close to what we (portuguese) eat back home. so now I am a Nando's fan!

Re: Off to London for a Holiday ! What are you dying to eat?!

I was in London 2 weeks ago and was craving some decent Asian food. I missed out on Indian - the area I was in, surprisingly to me, had no Indian restaurants. I found a restaurant elsewhere, but it was overpriced and poor. But I ate some great Thai in the Camden area.

My family members make great roasts and yorkshire puddings (), so I can get by in life without these.

I've only been to Zurich twice, but you can find good middle eastern and indian food in Zurich too, of course it's a little more expensive than the curry-take-away anywhere in England.

Moving over I'll probably be missing Fish&Chips... and a good stir fry.

The ME restaurants in Zurich are OK, but not a patch on those in London. The prices are excessive and the portions pretty meagre. I took a party of 4 to Palme de Beirut, ZH where we ordered a Mezze for 4. What we got looked like a Mezze for two i.e 2 of each pastry, and tiny servings of salad, humus etc..

As for Le Cedre, I won't be going there simply because the owner is a complete and utter a*se. We turned up 15 mins late for a reservation (got hopelessly lost) and he turned us away telling us that our table had gone to a walk-in. When I tried to reason with him he simply turned on his heel, waved dismissively and left us standing there

Nandos is a South African company which has expanded into the UK and also the States.A friend of ours started up Nandos in the States(he is based in Washington DC)and so far it is going
really well. The Nandos advertisements in SA have been fab and also controversial.

I always thought it was originating from Mozambique but I was wrong if you read source Nando's history.

I wholeheartedly agree about controversy behind advertisments if you take a look at this kak advert:

Don't wanna hijack anymore so anyone English muffins?

Thanks,Jacek!
Love Mark Lottering(the comedian) though, despite the ad not being great.
He's so 'Cape Town'.Sorry,as one who doesn't contribute much to this forum,I must stop with the 'hijacking' incase I get kicked off.

Fish n chips served with mashed peas.
Seekh kebab and Tandoori chicken that are served at many Indian/Pakistani eating outlets. There are plenty of such eateries and can be found with out much effort in the north west part of London city.

Re: Off to London for a Holiday ! What are you dying to eat?!

I have just read through this thread and am MORTIFIED that the only thing Some people want to eat in London is Nando's food!!!! what a great shame, of course, one of the reasons for that is London is soooooo expensive.
If you visit England (not only London) hire a car and drive out. 30 minutes up the motorway you will be in the Oxfordshire countryside ( there are lots of other beautiful counties closeby too ) You will be spoiled for choice at the wonderful food on offer at the Country pubs. crispy meltingly tender belly pork, roast lamb, cooked for hours till it falls off the bone, rib of beef with all the trimmings etc.....
I get SOOOOOOO angry when our English food gets rubbished in the press, most of these journalists have only ever eaten in London, we have some of the BEST cuisine, you need to know where to go.
Give it a try, I can tell you now, I am feeling pretty deprived of good restaurant food at the moment, there seems to be a huge choice of Italian, Italian or Italian!!! obviously, I don't know where to go.

Re: Off to London for a Holiday ! What are you dying to eat?!

Well Well, just back from a great trip to London.
I ate so much great food, I think my wife is mortified at my new 'plump' face, ! Perhaps it's also due to the many pints of Guiness I had everyday from lunchtime onwards.

I ate some great pub grub, tender roasted neck of pork, pork belly, lamb chops, Steak & Kidney pie, Fish & Chips, Sandwiches, Bangers & Mash and many many fry ups.

Also had some fantastic Lebanese food in Edgware, amazing Indian/Paki food in Tooting Broadway, Chinese in Chinatown and also went to Wagamama in Wimbledon.

All in all, I had a truly excellent time. P.S., also went to Nando's and love their peri peri sauces. Need to try and get some of the bottled stuff !
