Poppy seeds

hi!

There is a recipe I want to try but it requires poppy seeds. I checked Coop, Manor and Migros in Lausanne, but no luck. Any ideas where I can find it? I don't even know what they're called in French.

Re: Poppy seeds

In German they are Mohnsamen. In French I think they are called graine de pavot. I used to make the mistake of looking for them in the spice aisle but they are normally found in relatively big bags in the cereal aisle at Coop.

Hi Maleficium,

They are called "Graines de Pavot" in French and you should be able to get them at any Migros or Co-op, usually in the baking section.

Re: Poppy seeds

My 'Leo' says graine de pavot.
Here they are Mohnsamen.
Bio Shops and Reformhäuser will have them at a rough guess.
You'll have to do a search for the Swiss-French for Reformhaus - I honestly haven't a clue!

'Leo' gives magasin de produits diététiques but I bet there is another name for it.

Good luck in your search.

Operagirl and zwissmiss both beat me to it! Getting slow in my old age!

Re: Poppy seeds

If they are not in the baking section, try also near the fruit and nuts. I've definitely seen them near the slivered/flaked almonds and shredded coconut, which could also be considered 'baking' ingredients...

Re: Poppy seeds

Otherwise try a large "Apotheke" - chemist. Strange I know but they usually stock the hard to find spices.

I found it really weird when people told me to go there for food coloring, too!

By the way, thanks for this thread - I've been looking for poppy seeds so I can make my lemon poppyseed bread for quite some time, now!

Re: Poppy seeds

I always buy mine from Asian shops just because I can read the labels and there is no confusion!- don't know if it is cheaper or not (1.50chf for 100gms; just checked the label)

Re: Poppy seeds

Agreed. Any Indian shops will have them, and a lot cheaper than in the Reformhaus too.
