Let's face it, decent bread doesn't need toasting. Actually toasting is a means for making that slightly moist cotton-like pre-sliced, plastic-wrapped stuff called bread in certain countries at least somewhat palatable.
I heard it said once that in Britain bread making (for the convenience sliced stuff) is the art of making water and flour stand up.
But in answer to your "decent bread doesn't need toasting", I never heard of "beans on bread".

I have. Prefer it to toast, actually.

Now that's a silly thing to say, isn't it!
Might as well say "Decent flour doesn't need baking."
or even "Good wheat doesn't need milling."

I expect toasting to remain, for the foreseeable future,
the preferred means of making toast.

So have I.
I've tried all these, English toast, American toast, Burre toast bread, Sandwich toast loaves from Migros, Co-op and other places.

If you want properly toasted / medium brown toast this stuff still retains some moisture and is still soft rather than attaining a 'bakelite' type quality

This is the first one where the bread in the packet is moist (not air dried) and also the size of each slice is similar to a British loaf (ie surface is almost twice as big).

Give it a try next time you're in Co-op and you'll see what I mean. Only available in white I think.

My Swiss Holy Grail has been found. What shall I do with the rest of my life now my quest is over ?
Heinz Spaghetti methinks.
Go visit Grumpy Grapefruit at the HB market on wednesday and get some proper British cheese and chutney to go with it... Yum yum!!

Actually...

My mom makes a "the day before payday" meal involving baked beans and ground beef (I think folks from UK call it "mince"?), onions, a dash of worcestershire sauce and a bit of catsup.... served over buttered bread rather than toast.

However... I happen to prefer my PB&J on the moister "toast" breads (Denner has some American sandwich bread I like pretty well, "Super Sammy" is on the package ) here rather than the usual dry sponges with bread-like appearance. PB sticks to the roof of my mouth well enough without the bread aiding it along thank you very much.

On the other hand, I DO prefer the usual "toast" when making Picture Frame Eggs (what my mom calls "holes-in-one") as that bread holds up nicely when soaking up some egg as it cooks.

Weejeem, what I mean is, decent bread has a taste and texture of its own. It doesn't make you think you're eating a pile of moist paper tissues. So it needn't be toasted to please your senses. It may be toasted for certain purposes, but it's not a necessity. The UK has great Single Malt Scotch, the USA has great steaks, but sure like heck no one will ever go there for their bread.

I think you are missing the point of toast. Toast is initself a delicacy, a wonderful comfort food & just plain delicious. Sure there are great breads out there but sometime only a decent sized slice of hot buttered toast will do the trick.

Ok ok, I admit I just didn't grow up with melting butter on bread, and I still wholeheartedly hate its taste. Call me stubborn, but in my opinion melting butter has its place in cooking, not in eating.

Quite an emotional juncture after so many dry barren years.

Good News.

I have found in Co-op a sliced loaf that is usable in a ....wait for it ... a toaster.

It's called Backerland Sandwich (made in Austria).

This bread / loaf is a monumental breakthrough in (German) Switzerland because it's not brittle once toasted.

A very exciting find indeed, I can also confirm that it makes perfect toasties which I tried last night after rushing out to scour coop for the said loaf.

Happy days!

I dislike the taste of melting butter also on muffins, very much to the chagrin of my American moiety, who is a great muffin maker. Sorry. As I wrote, I think you must grow up with such stuff to like it, like the Swiss who love stinky Appenzeller cheese that chases away most foreigner.

Nice work Caroline

Glad I could've been of assistance.

If anyone else has tried and tested this manna from heaven (Austria) and has noticed its magical properties (or otherwise) I'd appreciate it, as some people obviously don't know what on earth I'm wittering on about.

If people don't buy this quality loaf (or any other product for that matter) it may just be withdrawn.

"go out kids and buy millions"
(whose quote is that ?)

They've had it at our COOP for at least a year and we go through a loaf every few days. It's pretty good for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as well.

Well thanks a lot for sharing the info with us all!

Shame on you. I spread the Good News and all you spread is Jam (jelly) and Peanut Butter. Thanks a lot.

This is the sort of thing people like us, on this Forum, like to use it for, for sharing helpful / handy hints.

(or bored people use it for sniping, own amusement, posting avitars of the people they most like to have sex with, self engrandisement, or all 4, ( www.englishforum.ch/food-drink/60423-please-sit-down-before-reading-post.html#post538945 ) Was unaware that (since DaveA left) a simple post about toast could raise a derisory retort. Well you live and learn. Talacher Bar clique rules prevail I guess.

I appreciate your sentiment but quite clearly you're nuts.

Anyhoo, try slicing a Parabrot, toasting and adding a topping of choice (mine's Marmite). It's like being born again.
Didn't appreciate your sentiment.

erm sorry, either lighten up or grow up.
A post about toast replied to with a post saying "you're nuts". (even if I were) is unwarranted.

if someone tells you they've found the perfect answer to their problem, they are generally not seeking an alternative solution - regardless of "topping".

'Anyhoo' have you ever considered NOT pressing the Reply button?
Maybe you too can be "born again" and try not to be so rude in future.
