| | | Perogies in Switzerland
Does anybody know where one can buy perogies? (For those like me who are too lazy to make it themselves). And, where can one find kielbasa (kubasa) as well...or rather, what is that sausage called here? Thanks

Hey they have some in Geneva but I guess to far to travel? I found that the perogies were not very good though ;(
There is a shop in Eaux Vives he has the cabbage, condiments etc. etc. so you can make gLompki etc.
Let me know if you find anywhere else in Switzerland.
Otherwise I buy in UK and freeze them to bring over...

Surely there are Polish food shops in Zurich? I would have no doubt you could find them there. It's not too far to travel from Aargau.

This prairie boy has had no luck either finding perogies in these parts. I did enjoy some good ones in Poland recently.

I made them with my Ukrainian friend, they were lovely and I can't remember the recipe, darn it.
If somebody has the recipe made of local ingredients, share it, pretty please...It was really easy. I remember a plain dough, ground beef with ground onions and some spice wrapped in the dough and boiled. We also ate it with some creme fresh (kinda tzatziki) sauce, slightly acidic.

Recipe is not an issue. It is finding someone to spend all day making them that's the issue. Preferable a nice Ukrainian or Polish girl.
Should have packed a suitcase with frozen perogies when I was back home recently.

I found the recipe no prob but it requires more coursely ground flour and that I can't find here. I did bring semi-fine flour with me from home so I will try it with that, but otherwise, I think I could use a finely ground flour that is available here (maybe mixed with a bit of polenta, to give it that good crunch you can't get with fine flour).
It is not such a b*tch to make, really, make it from 500g of flour and freeze half..It does not take so much time, considering you can buy a really good quality beef and don't have to grind your own like me back home.
500gr of flour, pinch of salt, 1 egg and a bit of water. Make the dough, it's a regular pasta dough, let sit covered for 30mins. Roll and cut up squares (mine were cca 6x6cms), fill with ground beef with salt, pepper, fried onions. Seal, boil until they swim up.
Other possible fillings: boiled potatos, mashed with fried onions and one piece of processed cheese (happy cow, kiri, etc. that's a ukrainian recipe I found). Or - stewed sauerkraut with salt, bit of honey and fried bacon bits and fried onions (that's my mom's).
The sauce seems to be just plain cheese sauce, slightly acidic due to the sour cream, milk, butter and fried onions.
Have friends over, it's a great meal for company of buddies, etc.

Before I moved to Switzerland my best friend worked here for 8 months and she went on and on and on about Switzerland having the best perogies. I was so excited as I love them, a feeling of home after moving away - right?
I looked for months for these best ever perogies in the world that, according to her, could be found at every grocery store. I asked her a bunch of times and she just kept telling me to look.
Last fall she came to visit me and we went to the grocery store - and to my surprise she located the best ever perogies. Yeah, she was talking about these stupid things....not exactly a perogie, but thanks for trying!
I'm still on a perogie hunt in Zurich.....

It might be possible to find Pierogies in a Jewish grocery or food market. There must be places in Zurich, given the sizable Orthodox/Hasidic Jewish community here.

totally laughed my ass off when i read this. This is great. I also had someone tell me to eat a canelloni, it's the same anyways. Canelloni is NOT the same as a perogy. :P

at Weststr. 115
never been inside but those truck-size headgear wearing chaps look happy when coming out, with heavy shopping bags with them, so you might give them a try

Am still on the hunt. We could start a business and instead of Ali Kebab have PaweL the Perogie man!! Haa haa... Have some Golabki at home for now. Easier to cook |

ohh... this post is making me nostalgic! Perogies were my late night too much drinking University food! And my roommate and I used to make them from scratch. She called them ped-e-he -- i am not sure how that is spelled. And we usually just made cheese and potato. What is strange is that I was googling recipes just the other day but they are just so time consuming-- i hadn't considered the flour problem but that is another good reason to find them pre-prepared.
Hope you can find a Zurich connection!

I know this thread is old-ish....
But, anyone know any place selling perogies (pedaheh) in the Lausanne area?
There must be a Polish store or something, no? The kind I like best are the ruskie (Polish) ones (filled with potatoe, cottage cheese and onion mixture).
So far in my wanderings around the city center I haven't seen any Polish/Russian/Ukranian stores....help a girl out!
I know it's a bit early, but have Christmas dinner to think about!
