Much of it you can source here: www.leshop.ch (Migros online) and www.coop.ch.

Most of them are commonly available items so you might want to go here to translate them first.

Re: Where can i get these ingredients ?

Hi, can only help with the items I too have needed, white wine vinegar, I bought this in Eurospar, but you can get in any migros or coop on the label will read Weißweinessig

Brown sugar you can get in most supermarket homebaking aisles should be packaged as Rohzucker

Worcester Sauce you can buy at any migros sometimes in baskets under the fish or fresh butcher counter and is L & Ps

Chargrilled Peppers in oil have seen these on shelves beside pickles also in Migros

Unfortunately can't help with the rest although I do get fennel seeds from local asian store, maybe you will get these other ingredients in stores such as this.

Try the butcher counter for your ribs, and hope your sticky ribs turn out as they should, take it all ingredients are for this?

  • red/white wine vinegar (found sherry vinegar in a big-ish Coop) - Coop/Migros/Jelmoli/Globus - Coop/Migors always have white wine vinegar (Weissweinessig) - Jelmoli/Globos will have a variety of red wine vinegar
  • cider vinegar - Coop/Migors (Apfelessig)
  • buttermilk - Coop/Migros (Buttermilch)
  • smoked paprika - (Spain - sorry!)
  • baby back pork ribs - a good local Metzgerei or the market at Helvetiaplatz or in Oerlikon
  • worchester sauce - larger Coop (St. Annahof)
  • soft brown sugar or molasses - use search feature in this forum and search for brown sugar
  • fennel seeds - Reformhaus or Coop/Migros (Fenchelsamen)
  • chargrilled peppers in oil (in a jar) - Turkish stores
Good luck with your search

If you happen to decide that that recipe doesn't quite do it for you, I've found this recipe to be quite good and it is easily "fiddled" with... I don't tend to leave a recipe exactly as read for more than the first time or two that I've used it.

Quote:
Coca Cola Barbecue Sauce

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 1 hour

===Ingredients:===
  • 2 cups Coca-Cola (or similar cola)
  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 1/2 onion large onion, finely chopped
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons black pepper
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons salt
  • 3 tablespoons chili powder
===Preparation:===Mix all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a low simmer and cook slowly for 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally.

Among the changes I've made is that I tend to use less chili powder and pepper and I generally only keep cider vinegar in the house so use that instead of the white vinegar.

Also, if I am feeling a bit more in the mood for tanginess along with my sweet I add in about a tablespoon of yellow mustard.

If I am using it to make pulled pork I do not put in any chili powder or pepper at all and instead put in allspice (tasting about every 15min or so to check if it needs more) and a bit of maple syrup.

Now, if I were making that sauce for my father instead of my hubby I'd add in a little bit of finely chopped jalapeño pepper and leave the chili powder and black pepper as is.

Re: Where can i get these ingredients ?

You can get Worcestershire sauce (& many other International foods) in any Globus department store, or go to British food online shop www.myexpatshop.com - they have a good selection & can even order in special requirements for you. I've used them a lot, and find them most helpful. Good luck with your shopping!

Re: Where can i get these ingredients ?

Smoked Paprika can be found at the Jelmoli. It is called Rauchpaprika and is not with the other paprikas but a little farther along. But, it is about 8chf for a little bag.

They seem to have something similar at the Globus, but they were all out when I was there looking for it. Again, it was in the spice section but down in another area-- not with the regular paprikas but down with the saffron, or something else "exotic".

Good luck!

I am just curious to know if anyone spotted Malt vinegar in zurich. It is recommended in a recipe for shrimp curry, would love some pointers to finding a bottle.

Re: Where can i get these ingredients ?

You can order it from the London Store in Zug or you could try Jelmoli to see if they have it.

If you whip double or whippling cream until it splits the liquid part will be buttermilk and the solids will be butter. For more detailed instructions see

For fennel seeds, try at an Apotheke.

Another method that's cheaper, less effort and you're more likely to have the ingredients in the fridge: add one tablespoon of lemon juice to one cup of milk and let it sit for 10 mins until it 'clabbers'.

Apparently you can use vinegar instead of lemon juice, but I've never tried that; I'm always making this to toss in a cake so lemon juice seems acceptable whereas the idea of vinegar is gah...
