Draught Guinness for less than CHF9 in Zurich?

do you know a pub in zurich with not so extremely expensive drought guiness ? (for less than 9.20 or 8.90 in Paddy Reilly's chf )

i know it might have been asked already, but maybe something has changed

(8.90 is technically below 9, but i would rather expect maybe even lower price ?

Drought Guinness probably costs more because of the lack of water that year..

Re: drought guiness for less than 9 chf in zurich?

The only places I know with draught Guinness are the English/Irish themed places (ie Paddys, Nelson, Twist, Lion, Bonny Prince) and the Andorra bar. The other places (eg Big Ben, Shamrock) have Murphys instead. I think all of them will charge as much as the market will bear.

Make that draught Guinness... unless the lack of the black stuff has indeed caused a drought.

No longer Murphys in the Big Ben - Changed to Guinness earlier this year. Can't remember how much it is (don't drink it myself) but I'm sure it's in the 8.50 to 9.00 range.

Problem with drinks like Guinness is that they're only available in the type of places where the beer is going to be expensive anyway.

You can get beer a lot cheaper if you get off the beaten track and go into a rough and ready swiss bar (e.g. Strauss on the corner of Militär Langstrasse). Beer there costs just over 5.00 for a large one, but there's only one beer to choose from, and it ain't Guinness. Not to mention the Stammgäste might give the less confident amongst us cause for concern. The more adventurous of us will however appreciate the lengths these people go to to preserve the historical importance of terrible fashion and even worse haircuts (mullets included) from the 70's/80's.

Re: drought guiness for less than 9 chf in zurich?

Considering the cost of a can of Guinness in the stores - circa CHF4.40 - compared to Murphy's etc, it's no wonder it's expensive. I don't know if they have a premium tax or something but it stings.

Makes you drink it slower, anyway. Which is a good thing. "Chill for at least two hours".

Which Big Ben do you mean. The Niederdorf one or the one by Hardbrücke?

Ahhh, good point. I mean the one in the Niederdorf - I always think of the one by Hardbrücke as the Big Ben West Side.

Re: drought guiness for less than 9 chf in zurich?

maybe then - in zurich there is a drought of draught guinnesses ?

anyway, thank you for your answers, i guess there is no possibility to pay for it more normal price

the problem is that usually guinness is not twice as expensive as normal local beer in other countries, so i don't understand why it is like this here.

Re: drought guiness for less than 9 chf in zurich?

As explained: English pubs are expensive, only English pubs sell Guiness draught, therefore Guiness --> expensive. Look at the difference between a normal pint of Lager to a Guiness in these pubs... only 1-2.-chf. Pretty much the same as everywhere.

Another place with Guinness - St Joseph's Pub, in Hardbruecke. It's CHF 9 for a pint there.

What we need is a J.D Wetherspoons.ch - This would create a bit of competition on the Guinness and other prices. Not to mention the selection!

Re: drought guiness for less than 9 chf in zurich?

All this talk about Guinness, makes one thirsty so it does .. I stopped trying to drink the black stuff in Zürich quite a few years back because it was terrible and I assume it still is. Has it improved, can you seriously get a decent pint of Guinness in Zürich?

Re: drought guiness for less than 9 chf in zurich?

For the record fellow Irish I checked out the new McGees pub opposite Bhf. Wiedikon last night and the Guinness is the same as everywhere else for 17.80 for 2 pints. However they do have a lively quartet from 2030 onwards playing music. Unfortunately my colleague needed to leave so I didn't hang around for more.

Perhaps we can get a Guinness-abo with every 6th pint free? What's annoying possibly due to the investment is there's absolutely no competition, it's all around 8.50-9.00.
