You can buy Jelly Beans in the sweet shop on the ground floor of Kid's Town on Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich, I think there is also a similar sweet shop at Zurich Airport.

I think there is one on Niederdorf as well. I think it is called Lollypop.

You can buy muscavado sugar in Globus in Zurich, its in the baking/dessert section (right by the tills) on the lower floor. You may have to route around on the shelf though as it was concealed behind the demerera sugar. I spent ages trying to find proper dark brown sugar for baking brownies and most supermarkets only stock cane sugar or regular white/processed sugar.
Globus also sells bicarb of soda and baking powder which is handy as can't seem to find self raising flour anywhere so had to make my own!

You can get dried cranberries (Preiselbeeren) loose at the Migros in Metalli shopping centre in Zug at only CHF2 for 100g, whereas it's sold in a 125g pack at Coop for around CH4.
Yes, I also had a big discussion with acquaintances and other half when we first moved here -- over 'brown sugar' vs raw sugar.
The vanilla sugar (Vanillin Zucker) sold in lil' packets in CH works fine. The vanilla pods are quite expensive, like in most other countries.
If you like pistachio nuts (for eating or in baking/cooking), stock up on it as it's quite dear here -- about CHF4 for 100g.

They have lots of stores in cities, like in Bern, Zurich, Lucerne,etc.....and also can be purchased online. http://www.lolipoponline.ch/ |

What about cashew nuts? I cannot find them in large quantities for a decent price. Denner used to have small packets but they have disappeared where I live. |

Caution: They are addictive! |

Most of the swiss that I know around the Baden area travel over to Germany to shop for groceries. They claim it's MUCH cheaper and worth the drive. Anyone else do the same? Also, are the selections there the same as in Migros, etc.?

| | | Brown Sugar?
Does anyone know what the Swiss equivalent of brown sugar is?? I've been looking for months, though clearly in the wrong places. I need brown sugar for baking...just some nice moist brown sugar...?? I'm totally baffled.
I've asked a couple Swiss people, who first assure me that of course they have brown sugar but when we go into specifics it's clear we're not talking about the same thing. In the States it's brown, moist, molasses-y...I don't know how else to describe it, but I'd really like to find it!
Thanks!
Erin

If you have no luck locally try www.britshop.ch. They have brown sugar and will send it to you through the post. You can pay online with a credit card or via the post office. Good source for things that aren't available here in Switzerland and very efficient.

Hope you have better luck than I - I've kept an eye out for brown sugar (as in Domino's in USA, I think) for the past 11 years in Switzerland. The closest I've found is "casonade" thought it is not nearly as rich and chewy. Someone told me once that I could order it from Geneva via the net. Does that sound familiar to anybody?

When we went to Geneva there is in fact an American store by the train station that sells Domino's brown sugar along with other things - but very over priced of course! http://www.americanmarket.ch/ is the shop. I guess they also deliver but I've never tried. For a pseudo American brown sugar good enough for baking I've used white sugar and molasses. For most of the things I have made (pies mostly) you can't tell the difference. If you just google it you can find the right combination. Hope this helps!

I make my own for the american style bakery I occasionally make, stored in a really!!! airtight container i find it keeps for up to 6 months before getting a bit hard to separate.
I mix 2/3 of sugar with 1/3 of molasses
