| | | Best 10 CHF Coop wine?
I've failed to select a decent everyday wine three times now. Any suggestions? Primitivo Salento was 10 CHF and recommended by someone else on here. I'll try it tomorrow. Any other reds that you guys like at this price point?

I love Campo Viejo. A dry spanish red, and it comes in average price (under 10) and a bit more expensive price.

There's been a huge wine glut in Australia for a few years now, and it's well and truly spilled over into the export market. With that said, you may need to step up to 12CHF to get them.
(As an Aussie I might be biased, but IMHO Australia makes the best value wines in the world. My wife and I have yet to find anything even remotely as good for the same price - at least within the price range we shop.)

You could try Santa Ana. As for Aussie wines, stay well clear of the Kangaroo Ridge - my father in law made that mistake and that's the worst wine I have ever tasted. The white wine of the same name was surprisingly okay.
IMO Coop doesn't have good value red wines, and we normally buy through wine expos, Mövenpick Wine or our local drinks shop when they have tastings.

We were drinking this one I think at a school function last week - one of the parents had chosen it - there's one with a blue/green label (avoid) and the one with the black label was really good! Seńorio de los Llanos Gran Reserva DO http://www.denner.ch/de/wein/wein_sort.php?1 |

As wonderful as Australian wine may be, it has to travel an awfully long way to get here which is just another added stress on our already stressed planet.
At Coop, sometimes it is wise to wait until they have one of their periodic sales and then get better wines at the lower price. Also, perhaps getting to know your local Weinbauer would be a good idea. Switzerland is so small, some of their fantastic wines don't even make it out of the country or town where they are produced! By getting to know them personally you can benefit from lower prices and lots of tasting :-).
In white we have been very happy with the Neuchatel wines such as the Blanc AOC Domaine des Coccinelles 2008. Lovely for aperos and with cheese and makes a nice conversation piece on the table (it is a bio wine and has a pretty picture of a ladybug on the label :-). Costs 11.90 but is regularly on sale 20% off, or if you order 6 bottles it is 10% cheaper anyway. This label also makes an absolutely delicious (albeit more expensive) Pinot Noir.
For red in Switzerland check out wines from the Wallis/Valais region.
Coop also has a category of recent prize winners in wine competitions. Many of these wines are highly priced, but occasionally a lower priced wine will win. I ordered a dozen cases of a not-too-expensive winning Pinot Noir for our housewarming party here and it was fabulous!

For Swiss wines, there is some great Tessin Merlot. Not for less than CHF 10 a bottle unfortunately. From the Coop wine website, Ligornetto is one of my favourites and Selezione d'Ottobre is also great.
From Portugal, Vin de Table Arcodor at CHF 6.90 is popular with the Swiss and the Douro Vale de Sao Domingos Reserva at CHF 8.50 is alright.
For new world wines, the Malbec Mendoza Réserve Santa Ana, Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz Naturally Australian both at CHF 9.90 are good, Shiraz Wildcard P. Lehmann at CHF 11.90 - is well worth and extra CHF 2 and is cheaper than in Australia
Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon/ Merlot Clancy's P. Lehmann at CHF 17.90 is also cheaper than in Australia and is a great drop.
Why not go to the next Coop winetasting? http://weinwelt.coop.ch/weinwelt/weindegustationen.do | | The following 2 users would like to thank MarieZug for this useful post:

There's a great Spanish wine.....Tores something or other. You can't miss it, it's the one with the plastic bull attached to the neck. I'm sure the last time I got it it was 9.95 CHF. Well worth it. Cheers!

I shall check out the sub-CHF10 selection on my next visit . . .

I know you asked for Red, but I highly recommend Jacob's Creek Semillon Chardonnay (Australia) for 9.90 Tip : Chill it well enough & enjoy it's smooth and refreshingly sharp taste.
It is quite 'up the creek' as it were |

My method,
Decide on budget/red/white/rose
Find bottle with deepest dimple in your category
Buy
I've been told it's quite a reliable method, I'll see if I can find the sources.

One Denner red I've got noted in my pocket is an Italian "Falanto Negroamaro"
Have to visit the cellar to get the name of some other recent favourites
BTW I'm also against the shipping of mid quality wines around the world, buy Swiss, French, Italian and Spanish (love those heavy reds).

Denner is fantastic for wine. You can get a lovely Spanish Rioja (Paternina) for about 8CHF, and a fantastic New Zealand Chardonnay for less than 5CHF.
