What would be different from a non-Indian fishmonger?

Re: Indian Fish shop

Hi ...

Yes, there are indian fish shops but I can't tell you where exactly. But if you have some time, walk along Josefstrasse or Konradstrasse starting near the Hbf and you will see a sign for an Asian fish shop, also written in Tamil.

If you keep walking along Josefstrasse until you pass Langstrasse and Quellenstrasse, you will see even more shops. It's probably not a bad idea to familiarise yourself with this area as especially since the area around Quellenstrasse is turning out to be a Tamil area. On a saturday, you will notice cars from outside of Kanton Zurich and the shops get very crowded.

Agarwals on Langstrasse (near Helvetiaplatz) also has fresh fish. Possibly this'll be your first stop as it's the biggest indian shop around.

Good luck ...

Re: Indian Fish shop

There is another large Indian fresh fish market before you get to Langstr. & Quellenstr. It's around Johannesgasse. or Josefstr. They'll also fillet and prepare the fish as you want.

On bus 32 next to altstetten. My wifes friend is Indian and she swears by the fish there. they cut it fresh - anyway you want. Been there and it is full of Sri Lankans, Indians and other asians (so it must be good). Some strange looking fish I have never seen also

Re: Indian Fish shop

Why don't you just buy a rod, reel and some bait and head on down to the lake ................

Re: Indian Fish shop

Since you say you are bengali, so I expect you to be more interested in fresh water fish than the sea water ones ....

Barkat near Schmiede Weidikon has some Rahu and Hilsa.

Try that one, also there is a bangladeshi store on the road which starts from the Metropol movie theatre, perpendicular to the tram line in Stauffacher.

Both of them would gladly make fish pieces ... if you ask them!

I know what is it to be a freshwater fish lover and stuck here! Have fun having Rui & Ilish!

Re: Indian Fish shop

Hi Moumita,

BenderRules did say that "both" would cut the fish into pieces for you - by this I take it to mean that he included Barkat

I would strongly suggest that you go to many of these places - just follow the maps and directions. It's good to get to know the area and with all these selections, I'm sure you can test out the variation in quality and freshness.

So when do we all come over for some fish curry?

Re: Indian Fish shop

Hi Nanda, There is one problem with the fish in stores. For example it often turns out that some of the fish in a frozen fish pack you pick up at Barkat is not really fresh(and this you know only when you are cooking it). And in some Srilankan shops the iced(non-frozen) fish is some times really stale and past its shelf life. And this is because they dont pay to much attention to this aspect and also dont use even a fraction of the 'food processing, freezing and transportaion' technology that even food chains that are lesser than migros or aldi use, and even if they use some technology their handling methods arent properly managed.
With this is mind please could you name a few shops that are the best places to buy fish- pleaces where they care to provide the customer the best possible service as regards quality.
Thanks.

Re: Indian Fish shop

Just thought I'd reply since the above post was for me - but I don't actually eat fish, so I couldn't tell you the best places, sorry

There's a place however that is off Langstrasse (across the big Denner, about a block up Langstr from the river, not the one on militairestr) that many people have mentioned to me. But I can't vouch for the quality, but if you're trying fish shops, that might be worth a try. I think it's called something like the "indian fish shop".

Happy "fishing"

~ Nanda
