My canteen stinks.

Every day it's either fish, chips and mushy peas with parsley sauce; Roast beef, Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, carrots, broccoli and onion gravy; or steak and kidney pudding with mashed potato, peas and gravy.

And it's always followed by jam roly-poly or bakewell tart - invariably with thick custard.

What I wouldn't give for a scabby sandwich with compulsory gherkin.
I take it this isn't in Switzerland . . .

It is, but unfortunately it stops serving at about 07.40 when my alarm goes off.

Reminds me of one of the meals I was served at the hospital here in Basel.

It had chicken, veggies and spätzle... if it had been rice rather than spätzle I would have called it "chicken fried rice".
The weirdest food I had was in the hospital canteen here, yeah. I was thrilled when they announced a "gateau" and crushed when they brought flan with absolutely no trace of any flavor. My husband smuggled food for me there daily, so I wouldn't starve.

I am really envious of those who can eat at canteen..Unless it compares to Migros restaurant food, which is just too salty and msg laden for me, mushy overcooked veggies and raw meat.

One thing is funny, I lived in Germany and now here, and there seems to be a similar principle that people I know here follow: if it is edible apart, it is edible all mixed together, besides eating is for nutritional value, forget the palate or presentation.

I miss the proper German wurst but fondue is not bad. Why don't you guys bring those tiny microwavable fondue pots to werk? I am hooked on those. Plus there is so much kirsh in it

The University hospital in Geneva ? Absolutely horrible, I lost 10kg in less than a month there... despite the daily food packages, I just couldn't eat the same **** everyday, some overcooked, bland meat with either pasta and rice with gravy.

Re: Your work canteen meal today

The weird options today seem to be:

pork geschnetzeltes with a Philadelphia herb sauce and pasta

or

beef tongue with hollandaise sauce

The non-weird option option is cordon bleu . . . but even this comes with a BBQ sauce (WTF?)

Re: Your work canteen meal today

Pat - Novartis on Campus has one of the most fab set-ups I know of.

In our shop - today doesn't count, as it is a Christmas lunch. Usually it is quite awesome too, with 5 choices of main course (a fish course with two sides, a vegeterian one, and 2 or 3 meat including one grilled to order), soup, salad buffet, fruits and fruit salad bar.
A full meal (with starter, main course, dessert) will set me back - ahh, 12 chf.

Usually however, i stick to salad and soup - alas I still have to work in the afternoon. Also, I noticed that when they try to do exotic - chinese, mexican... - it is very bad, they adapt it too much to local taste, no spices, bland to kill. Better to stick to international cuisine.

Todays canteen grub was something with Pasta spirals, an unenjoyable thin gravy-like sour sauce, and some meat, I could not identify for sure, but i think it was pork.
The drop down menus on EF sound more appetizing than that

Re: Your work canteen meal today

Wasn't at work today, but our canteen does the best spaetzli. Most restaurants cannot compare. They do tend to have fleischkase too often, and the vegi meal is a spring roll at least once at week, so the menu can be a bit repetitive.

They also do a good Luzern pasteli, which is on the menu about once a month. Even the fries are pretty good.

Unfortunately they re-did the kitchen within the last year and they no longer make their own desserts. Until then they had the best kremeschnitte. Retirees plan their visits around the kremeschitte.

Re: Your work canteen meal today

Our canteen is pretty good with one exception and I don't know if its unique to our chef or a swiss weird thing throwing all foods together that should not be mixed..

Asian - like red curry pork and vegetables with... fettuccine -WTF?
Why not rice? Why not asian noodles? Its like the chef reads the recipe and it says serve with rice or noodles and he decides that fettuccini is the same as asian noodles.....
Now i'm not complaining about the curry or asian food, whilst it wouldn't pass in Asia or another country with a decent size Asian population it is edible!
But WHY serve noodles or spaghetti with it? There is never a bowl of rice in sight when these asian foods are on the menu...but other times like pork fillet, courgetts and rice - the rice appears?????

Re: Your work canteen meal today

Hi Lilith! This christmas lunch at the canteen today sounds familiar...did you have free wine as well?

Actually, I feel quite lucky because we always have alot of choices at our canteen, free fruits, coffee and more than this, a very calming view to the lake. Here's a sample of our menu for tom. I'm guessing they never detail the dessert because of the awful calorie count

Because from my experience, a side dish is simply viewed a side dish, that you can just juxtapose to anything on your plate. They do it in restaurants here. Sort of bufet idea, when you think about it.

It makes me laugh. I think the chef just simply thinks - a carb is a carb, so we have meat, veg and some carb. That is enough to ask for, to have that criteria satisfied, nutritious, remember?

I go so out of my way to have the sides match properly (when I host a meal) that if another of my friends gives me a grilled sausage with plain pasta and pickles I am gona start bringing sandwiches to our get togethers, hahahaaaaa...I am kiddin' of course.

Yeah. I like this thread very much. I am still dying to eat at a canteen, since I am a canteen junkie, back home (goulashes, thick stews, lard and sausages). So much for my revolutionary vegan youth.

Divegurl - I thought someone may very well find it familiar... and I recognize the format of the menu, LOL!
Glad you enjoyed it!

I confess I skip the dessert area - actually steer very clear from it. One never know, do calories attack? )

Re: Your work canteen meal today

Worst selection in a while today:

Here are the selections in German:

1: Auberginen im Knuspermantel an einer Tomaten-Olivensauce auf Gnocchi

2: Poulet Hackspiessli an einem Erdnussdip serviert mit Honigreis und Knackerbsen

3: Kabeljaufilet in Kräutern gebraten mit einer Limetten-Dill Butterrostte serviert mit Salzkartoffeln und Knackerbsen

The fish sounds ok on paper, but in reality looked pretty awful.

The most disturbing thing was the chicken stick in menu 2.

I had a sandwich.

Re: Your work canteen meal today

CHUV food (that's the university hospital in Lausanne and all it's departments) tends to vary quite a bit, they have a few specialities not to be missed since there's always 2 meat and 1 vegetarian meal on offer.

I recommend: Papet Vaudois, Beef in brown sauce with pasta, Assiette Vaudoise, Spaghetti Bolognaise. If you're a patient, ask for 1.5 portions unless you're trying to slim, it's most enjoyable. If you're in Cery (worst luck!) the menus are displayed in the main room of your ward, and you can order your menu of the week in advance. There's usually two nurses with access rights for setting menus. Write them a concise note and you'll feast instead of suffering on average food.

Avoid: Tarte vegetarienne, it's left over veg in a quiche, taste level is horrible; anything ressembling minced something on Fridays and weekends; Juliened salad in the evenings (it's left over from morning and is totally horrible); anything in jelly (jellied veg or salmonish stuff was a fixture at one point); most fish (they just don't know how to cook it); anything that sounds exotic (think thai, japanese or mexican). Salads in the evening are usually pretty rubbish. Good luck with tea flavored ice cream...
